Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I purchased an Ikea Metod kitchen without soft-close doors and drawers. Now I would like to retrofit the soft-close function for doors and drawers to improve usability and avoid unnecessary wear. My questions to the community are:

- Which soft-close mechanisms actually fit Ikea Metod cabinets without requiring major modifications?
- Is it possible to install soft-close dampers afterward on doors and drawers that were not originally equipped with them?
- What tips are there for correctly adjusting the soft-close dampers so that doors and drawers neither slam shut nor close too slowly?
- Are there any special considerations during installation to ensure the function remains trouble-free in the long term?

I would be very grateful for experience reports, instructions, or recommendations. It would be helpful if concrete suggestions for suitable products, tools, and adjustment techniques could be provided.

Best regards,
Godwin

Absolutely great that you want to upgrade! It really makes a HUGE difference in everyday use 😊

I retrofitted the soft-close dampers myself in my Metod kitchen – it’s actually quite straightforward:

- For doors, you can use the dampers from Ikea directly; they are specially designed for Metod and fit perfectly. Installation is simple, the dampers are screwed to the side of the cabinet carcass, and often there are pre-drilled holes.
- For drawers, you need to pay a bit more attention since the drawer slides are crucial. Ikea uses different sliding systems, for example Metod with full extension. I clicked the soft-close modules directly into the slides – that works really well.
- It’s important to adjust the dampers properly: not too weak, or the doors will still slam, not too strong, or they will close too slowly. Usually, you can adjust this with a small lever.

My tip: just go step by step, start with one door or drawer, test it, then continue. And don’t be afraid of screwdriver and drill – it’s definitely doable!

Good luck, you’ll manage it for sure! 💪

That is correct. Soft-close dampers only work with slides that support this feature. Ikea mainly uses full-extension slides with integrated soft-close modules for Metod cabinets.

For retrofitting, the following points should be considered:

- Check compatibility: For older drawer slides without soft-close, it is often more practical to replace the slides rather than install individual dampers afterwards.
- The soft-close mechanism is usually installed beside or behind the slide rail.
- The dampers are generally available from Ikea as replacement parts (part number: 108574). Alternatively, compatible aftermarket modules exist.
- For doors, there are side-mounted dampers attached to the inside of the cabinet. Make sure the doors are properly aligned before installing the dampers.

Adjustment is usually made via a screw or a small adjustment lever on the damper — this affects the closing behavior.

Tools: Phillips screwdriver, possibly a cordless drill, spirit level for door alignment.

Conclusion: Retrofitting is possible, but for older Metod models, replacing individual parts may be more cost-effective than attempting a retrofit. The decision depends on the condition and age of the existing kitchen.

Retrofit soft-close installation works well if the drawer slides allow it.

For doors:
- Attach soft-close dampers on the side with screws.
- Screw holes are usually already present.

For drawers:
- If full-extension slides lack soft-close, it’s better to get completely new slides.
- Dampers can usually be integrated as modules.

Adjustment is possible with a screw or lever.

Make sure doors and drawers are properly aligned beforehand!
