Good evening, dear community,

We are about to start renovating our home! Several elements will be renewed or replaced. However, we are uncertain about one issue.

The previous owner installed door frames with folding interior doors on the ground floor. These doors are actually in like-new condition, but we really don’t like the folding doors.

In theory, would it be possible to keep the existing door frame but replace the folding door with a standard door leaf?

In your opinion, what makes more sense: to replace the door frame at the same time, or to keep it in place? And if we keep the frame, is it a major effort to adapt standard door leaves to the existing frame?

To illustrate, here is a picture:

The door frame needs to be replaced as well; everything else would be uneconomical.
Why do the doors absolutely have to be removed?
At first glance, I actually find them quite interesting.

You could ask the door manufacturer about this; maybe it’s possible, and they still have the door leaf in the matching color in their product range. Alternatively, the carpenter might be able to modify it. Is that a standard size? I’m not familiar with folding doors, and you can’t see the hinges in the photo (do these doors even have standard door leaf hinges?), but that’s how I would approach it. Removing the door frames only makes sense if the options mentioned above don’t work or if you don’t like the color anyway.

If these doors are really like new and also of good quality, I would rather keep them. New proper doors are expensive.

Why not? At first, after reading the headline, I expected those awful 1970s-style doors that look like a brown faux leather jacket with a handle, but what’s shown in the photo actually looks quite classy. I wouldn’t be in a rush to tear those out.
