alborzHello everyone, I have a Malm nightstand from Ikea, and unfortunately some unpleasant stains have appeared on the wood or surface. Before damaging the furniture surface, I would like to know: What are the best methods to remove stains on a Malm nightstand without affecting the material? I am especially interested in whether simple household remedies can be used or if special cleaning products are recommended, and how to generally proceed carefully to remove stains without damaging the finish or surface. I look forward to your experiences and tips!
Hello alborz,
your question is very well formulated, and I understand that you want to be cautious. Basically, the Malm nightstand is made of particleboard with either a foil finish or a painted surface – both of which are sensitive to harsh cleaning agents.
For initial attempts, mild products like a lint-free, slightly damp cloth with warm water and some dish soap are suitable. Avoid excessive moisture, as it can cause the particleboard to swell.
If the stains are more stubborn, sometimes an eraser (used very gently) or special plastic/furniture cleaners recommended on the packaging for "coated surfaces" can help.
Please never use solvents such as turpentine, nail polish remover, or strong chemicals – these can damage the foil or paint finish.
If you like, I can provide you with a detailed step-by-step guide on the best way to proceed.

I had similar issues with my Malm nightstand and started with lukewarm soapy water, which already removed many stains. For stubborn spots, you can also try a mixture of water and a few drops of vinegar, but use it sparingly and wipe thoroughly afterward!
And hey, what worked really well for me was using a soft eraser to gently rub out small stains. Don’t worry, it won’t damage the wood. Give it a try – it’s great! 🙂
If the stain is very stubborn, I finally used a mild furniture polish. Important: always test on an inconspicuous area before treating larger surfaces!

What are the best methods to remove stains from a Malm nightstand without damaging the material?I would like to add that the Malm nightstand has a melamine resin-coated surface, which is quite resistant to moisture and many cleaning agents. However, I recommend the following precautions:
- Use only mild cleaning products, as aggressive substances can dissolve the surface.
- Always test any cleaning product first on an inconspicuous area.
- Use a soft cloth; never use abrasive cleaners or steel wool.
For specific types of stains:
- Water stains: often just wiping with a damp cloth followed by drying is enough.
- Grease stains: a mild dish soap solution or a little alcohol on a cloth, but wipe off quickly.
- Ink stains: often require specific stain removers, but test carefully.
If home remedies do not work, special furniture cleaners designed for coated surfaces are the best choice. Some products also contain care agents that protect the surface. That way, you can remove stains and maintain the Malm nightstand at the same time.

a soft eraser, with which I carefully rubbed out small spots. That’s a good tip, and I can confirm that simple tricks sometimes work!
For my Malm nightstand, I once had coffee or red wine stains that water alone couldn’t remove. I first cleaned the area with a microfiber cloth and a neutral cleaner. For tougher stains, I used isopropyl alcohol, applying it sparingly with a cotton swab to treat the stain spot by spot. Afterwards, I immediately wiped the area with clean water to remove any residue.
It is important to handle these substances very carefully. You don’t want to damage the material or end up with unsightly marks. Therefore, I would always recommend testing first on an inconspicuous spot and gradually working from milder to stronger agents.
Maybe alborz can add which exact types of stains they are dealing with? That would make the advice even more precise.
