I want to start by saying that I am not an expert, so please excuse any likely gaps in my knowledge.
We have owned a bungalow for one year, which was built using 36.5 cm (14.4 inches) Poroton brick.
In our living room, there is one window measuring 2000 mm (79 inches) wide and 800 mm (31.5 inches) high. This window, together with the roller shutter box, is located directly below the ring beam.
Since this is on the south side, we would like to replace this window with a patio window measuring 3000 mm (118 inches) wide and 2000 mm (79 inches) high, plus the roller shutter box.
We plan to remove the old window, open the wall underneath, and widen the opening by 1000 mm (39 inches).
Now to my question:
Does increasing the width by 1000 mm (39 inches) have little effect on the stability of the gable, since the ring beam can carry the weight without any issues? Or will the opening need to be reinforced in some way?
P.S. I am happy to upload a photo of the gable side if needed.
Thank you very much for any replies.

Hello MartinK,
We are currently facing the same problem. Windows measuring 1.5 meters (5 feet) are installed directly below the ring beam and need to be replaced with wider patio doors.
There isn’t enough height for an additional lintel.
What was the outcome for you? Did you find a solution?
Thanks, G.
