ᐅ Reducing painting costs. Any suggestions?

Hello everyone!

The drywall installers will be finished soon, and after the tilers, we can focus on painting and flooring work. Accordingly, we’ve requested a quote. Unfortunately, it is well above our budget (over 16,000€). The quote includes covering and masking work, priming, filling and sanding, and paint fleece.

We now want to skip the paint fleece, as a perfectly smooth surface is not that important to us and the cost is quite high. But even without this item, we are still looking at over 10,000€. The filling and sanding work is also quite expensive. We could probably save those costs if we apply textured wallpaper (Raufasertapete) on the Q2 walls, right, or am I mistaken?

What other options are there? We have Q2 plaster. We know it’s not recommended to paint directly on this surface. However, our expectations for the finish are not very high. We are not fans of wallpaper, so eventually we just want to be able to paint on our own.

What exactly speaks against simply painting our Q2 walls? (Of course, we would sand and fill them beforehand.)

Thanks for your answers!

That sounds good @motorradsilke
I also think we can manage it nicely this way, and there won’t be many bare walls at all.

Just keep in mind that without painter’s fleece, you will likely develop some cracks in the walls over the next months or years. These are common settlement cracks that can be disguised with painter’s fleece. It’s not a big issue, so don’t worry about it. The cracks might be minor or appear throughout the walls.

P.S. To hide walls that aren’t perfectly smooth, textured paint (roller plaster) is also an effective solution (although it does not prevent settlement cracks). You can also tint it as desired, similar to painting.

We moved in during October and so far have no cracks, at least none that are visible (I don’t know what might be behind the wardrobes). I’m curious if they will appear later, but I don’t really expect it anymore. So it’s possible to be lucky.

P.S. To conceal walls that aren’t perfectly smooth, textured paint (also known as roll-on render) is a good option (but it doesn’t help with settlement cracks). It can be tinted as desired, similar to painting.

However, you have to like textured paint in the long term. Removing it is quite an art in itself….

Nothing. That's what we did as well.

Of course… I thought we were actually talking about a bungalow?

The price surprises me a bit. For us, the entire bungalow (140 m² (1507 sq ft)

But that’s not even a bungalow…

I wouldn’t choose textured paint either.

You need to know what you can and want to do yourself, and what you want to have.
We managed well with a paint finish in exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS). Built scaffolding inside and then went at it with elbow grease… Now, after 8 years, many cracks are visible! How to deal with them is something you can decide then, or even now.

1. Do it yourself
2. If not, inquire regionally or beyond on your own

The price is probably high because demand is strong. Take it or leave it.
