ᐅ Recommendation for Digital Heating Thermostat

Hello everyone,

In our future house, an air-to-water heat pump from Daikin (Altherma 3 R ECH2O 308/508 H/C (H) (Biv) 8kW) will be installed. We now want to replace the analog heating thermostats with digital ones. Since there are countless options available, I wanted to ask here if you could recommend any. They don’t need to be smart home compatible.

Primarily, I just don’t want to use analog controllers because I find them very inaccurate in our current apartment. That’s why I prefer a digital display so I can set the temperature more precisely here. I thought our Daikin air-to-water heat pump might require a special temperature controller.

Your heating technician can tell you if there are system-specific controllers. In our case (Weishaupt), there was something like that, but it’s not used to control individual rooms—it shows system statuses instead. You can also switch the heat pump’s control from outdoor temperature-based to indoor temperature-based with it (which we did as well, but via KNX, not with the manufacturer's basic system device).

I assume you are referring to the controllers for each room (ERR). These are usually independent of the heat pump manufacturer because the ERR does not communicate with the heat pump but with the actuators in the heating circuit manifold.

Don’t expect too much from temperature settings with decimal precision. As mentioned, the inaccuracy comes from the system itself. The actuator on the heating circuit can only be "open" or "closed." There is no "partially open" state. This means the controller will always compare its target value with a (self-measured) actual value and open or close the valve within a hysteresis. This naturally causes some fluctuation since low-temperature underfloor heating is a slow-responding system.

The analog controllers in our current apartment are too inaccurate for me. The settings vary in each room. This means that when I set the controller to 20 degrees Celsius (68°F), one room actually reaches 20 degrees Celsius (68°F), but in others, it can be 19, 21, or even 23 degrees Celsius (66, 70, or 73°F). With a digital setting or display, I feel more confident, along with the recommendation and experience of our electrician.

Set the heating correctly to the desired temperatures (hydraulic and thermal balancing), completely remove the ERR, and treat yourself and your family to something nice with the money saved. That is more sensible than an "upgrade" to digital thermostats...

If you want it to be smart, then do it as nordanney described.

I am facing the same "problem." But I am trying to replace the ERR in a sensible way. For example, I am looking for something with integrated sensors (temperature, humidity, motion, etc.) using a wireless protocol.

In my opinion, that is a false sense of "security" ... 🙂
