Hello, we would like to drain the rainwater into a stream at the property boundary. With the garage and terrace roof, the total roof area to be drained is about 150 sqm (1,615 sq ft). Obtaining permission should not be a problem. I am wondering what the best way to implement this would be. The distance across the garden is about 35 m (115 ft).

Underground PVC pipes would probably limit us with garden planting because of the roots, right?

A surface channel would therefore appeal to me more, but what is the best material to use so that it also looks good?

How much slope is achievable? 35m (115 feet) is quite a long distance.

Slight hillside slope down to the stream, and the house itself will be raised by about 1.5 m (5 feet) with masonry to reach street level. Therefore, the gradient should not be a problem.

And why not use a PVC sewer pipe? It’s commonly used and doesn’t cause any issues – it’s already installed at a depth of at least 80cm (31.5 inches).

I wanted to plant some medium-sized trees and shrubs, such as rowan and elderberry. Don’t you think their roots grow about 80 cm (31 inches) deep?

Yes, and? That doesn’t bother either the plants or the pipes 😉
