Hello everyone,

I am currently working on upgrading my new KALLAX shelving unit with retrofitted doors. I have encountered a few issues that I did not expect. Firstly, attaching the doors is not as straightforward as anticipated because the mounting rails and holes often do not align perfectly, requiring adjustments to properly level the doors. Secondly, I am having trouble with stability: the doors seem a bit wobbly when opened and closed, which I didn’t expect for this type of furniture.

I am particularly interested in whether there are universal solutions or tricks you have used when retrofitting doors to the KALLAX system. Perhaps there are better screws, specific brackets, or tools that really help.

Also, I would like to know if you have experience with different door types that are easier to install.

I look forward to your tips and advice, including any mistakes I should avoid.

For the KALLAX doors, it often helps to first carefully check all the holes and, if necessary, slightly re-drill them with a drill.

Also, be sure to use suitable hinges that are strong enough, or install additional brackets for reinforcement.

Otherwise, properly align the doors before installation and check them with a spirit level.

I know how frustrating something like this can be. I also had issues when retrofitting the KALLAX doors and was initially quite annoyed because nothing fit as neatly as I had imagined.

But with some patience, I eventually found ways to adjust the doors so they sit securely and properly aligned. It’s important not to get discouraged and to accept minor imperfections if you don’t want to completely rebuild the piece of furniture.

Maybe there are users here who can offer specific tips for the different types of doors. 🙂

Hello Sofabien,

I have been retrofitting the KALLAX doors for some time now and would like to share a brief guide on how I proceed to avoid the mentioned issues.

1. Preparation: First, check all drill holes and hinges for dimensional accuracy. Manufacturing tolerances can sometimes be a bit generous.

2. Rework: If holes do not fit exactly, use a smaller drill bit to adjust or carefully enlarge them with a sanding attachment.

3. Reinforcement: I recommend installing additional metal brackets on the inside of the doors to increase stability, especially for larger doors.

4. Alignment: Use a spirit level and, if available, a clamp to hold the doors properly in place while screwing them in.

5. Screws: Use screws with a small diameter, specifically designed for furniture, to avoid damaging the material unnecessarily.

Summary: Good preparation and precise work help a lot. Stability can often be significantly improved by adding brackets and careful alignment.

If you like, I can also share brands or sources for improved hardware.

That’s a really good tip. Stability is often the biggest issue with retrofitted doors on KALLAX shelves.

Additionally, I would say: make sure the doors don’t become too heavy. Use the lightest possible door materials to reduce stress on the hinges and the shelf itself. If you paint the doors or cover them with films, that can also affect the fit.

– it’s exactly that patience and precise adjustment that often lead to success.

If you want, I can also recommend some screws and fittings that work best with the KALLAX system.
