ᐅ Pleated Blinds – Poor Workmanship or Standard Quality?

Hello,

During our house construction, we received pleated blinds for a few minor defects from the builder, which were delivered to us by his subcontractor responsible for the windows.

The window installer simply used the construction measurements he took on-site while manufacturing the windows. Unfortunately, this didn’t work out as expected—the pleated blinds (all 4 pieces) are each about 3-4 mm (0.1-0.15 inches) too wide. As a result, the blinds no longer fit inside the frame in front of the glass but are positioned mostly in front of the windows. When opening the windows (all four are floor-to-ceiling patio windows), the blinds almost hit the wall (only the baseboard stops them).

Today, I saw the window installer passing by and called him over. He inspected the situation and said this is normal. However, online sources always emphasize that exact measurements must be taken and that every millimeter counts.

What do you think? Is this normal? Please see the attached photos. (Detailed shots left/right without the pleated blinds being moved)

The pleated blinds cost around €800 (which the construction company is paying).

How do you mount the pleated blinds?
There are pleated blinds that are installed using adhesive plates. The tension clip plates are then simply attached to the adhesive plates. This method holds very well.

The pleated blinds are drilled according to the commonly known "VS2" system. The width of the pleated blinds must be extremely precise.

We drilled because the hole has a diameter of 2mm (0.08 inches); it can easily be repaired with certain products or, alternatively, the reveal itself can be replaced (it’s just the edge that holds the glass in the frame). Furthermore, pleated blinds easily last 10 years or more and can be replaced later using the same system. So why not get it done properly from the start?

Adhesive mounting only works to a limited extent and up to a certain size. Once detached, it’s over, and you need a new adhesive part. For the additional cost, you could also buy a repair kit, which allows you to seal the holes again if needed (which realistically never happens anyway).

So we agree that the pleated blinds are too wide? I share the same opinion and think it looks awful and amateurish. You would expect better from a professional company. It also doesn’t help that I am getting tired of excuses, and their boss fits some stereotypes of a Central Eastern European when it comes to handling defects. I know that in the end nothing will come of this, even if I open the case and report this defect to our construction company.

It’s really frustrating here in Germany when people do shoddy work…

"...he looked at it and said that was normal."

Ah, even a skilled tradesperson (probably a certified master craftsman)... when I see the poor workmanship here, it always makes me feel sick,
and I’m really fed up with our developer.

They use shell construction measurements, and when tiles and flooring are installed, they’re surprised that nothing fits anymore. That’s just bad!
People like that should lose every contract so they don’t cause more nonsense!

Eastern European workers often work more diligently and deliver a better appearance.

Best regards

Well, he just didn’t want to deal with defect management. The invoice was sent to the contractor anyway, so he probably couldn’t charge the retail markup to the private customer and likely didn’t make much profit. Of course, I could have formally complained in writing, etc., but I didn’t feel like it. I’ve already fallen out with the window installer anyway. Let’s see what happens if someone breaks in over the next few years and I possibly need a new window.

It’s not really much that the guide rail is too wide in the end; but in my opinion, it would already help you.

Consider shortening the guide rail on the right and left by a few millimeters and then mounting the rail further back in the window? The end caps can be removed, and if you drill in the same spot, the current holes in the window should be covered.
