Hello everyone,
I have a problem with my plants on my Kallax shelf. Every time I water them, water runs through the plant pots directly onto the wooden surfaces of the shelf, leaving unsightly stains and sometimes slight swelling of the wood. My plants are in simple plastic pots without additional saucers, as I want to use the shelf space as efficiently as possible.
Does anyone have experience with this issue and can recommend an effective, low-cost solution to prevent water from leaking through without having to raise the plants unnecessarily or constantly use dripping trays?
I want to avoid damage to the shelf while keeping plant care practical. Thanks in advance for any helpful tips!

Hello Francisfa, simply place a waterproof base under the pots, for example, a plastic tray that collects the water. Alternatively, you can use plant saucers. These prevent water from reaching the wood.

To prevent water damage to Kallax shelves, I recommend the following approach:

1. Use pots with integrated saucers or existing plastic plant saucers.
2. Coat the shelves with a waterproof protective film or alternatively apply waterproof varnishes specifically designed for furniture.
3. Use capillary separation, such as small polystyrene or cork pads under the pots, to minimize direct water contact.

It is important to keep the moisture source as localized as possible and avoid allowing water to drain directly onto the shelves. Regular inspection and allowing time for drying can also help prevent damage.

Hello Francisfa,

I had a similar issue with my Kallax shelf. Here is a step-by-step tutorial that worked very well for me:

1. Lay down a waterproof surface, such as a thin, cut-to-size PVC tray or mat, which you place on the shelf board.
2. On top of that, I place sturdy, larger plant saucers that can catch the water. This prevents excess water from directly reaching the wood.
3. Make sure the saucers are slightly elevated, for example with small plastic spacers, so the plant pots stay dry and the water doesn’t remain stagnant.
4. Regularly clean the saucers and let everything dry thoroughly.

A common mistake is not using saucers or using ones without a rim, causing water to spill out directly. Overwatering plants also contributes to the problem. Monitor the amount of water you use over time.

Summary: Waterproof mat + sufficiently large, water-catching saucers + regular drying = no water damage on Kallax.

That sounds great, all the tips shared here! 🙂

I personally added an extra layer of moss under the planting substrates in my pots. It retains water, so less drains out and the drying time is extended. It works really well for me – the water stays inside and nothing drips down!

I can only confirm that! This way your shelf stays really well protected. Definitely worth trying! 🙂

In addition to the measures mentioned so far, I would like to address the material of the pots:

Porous materials like terracotta absorb water and release it downward, which worsens the problem of moisture accumulating on the climbing wall structure. Plastic pots without drainage holes are less risky in this regard but consistently require saucers.

Furthermore, suitable silicone seals between the saucer and the pot can prevent water from leaking underneath the pot.

With heavy water flow, a combination of waterproof coating on the shelves and mechanical sealing using saucers is recommended. This provides long-term protection.

Das Wasser bleibt drin und nichts tropft runter!

This is an effective approach to water regulation within the substrate, making watering more controlled.
