ᐅ Painting Plastic-Coated Cabinet Doors – What Should I Consider?

Hello

I want to paint our cabinet doors. They have an unattractive brown laminated surface. The laminate is glued on, not stretched, and it is porous.

Do I need to prime and fill the cabinet doors, or just fill and paint them?
Which primer or filler should I use, and what type of paint base (acrylic/latex) would be suitable?

Thank you very much for your help!

Yep. Having doors professionally laminated is definitely the better option in terms of appearance compared to painting them yourself or trying to apply a film manually.
We also have similar cabinets around; we simply replaced the doors with new ones.

As mentioned at the beginning, I want to paint rather than apply wallpaper. In this regard, I would like to know if this is technically feasible or not.

Sure. Brush or roller, paint, and apply. Technically, it’s doable. You just need the right type of paint. Usually, though, the result doesn’t look very good. But if that’s enough for you, you can give it a try.

As for materials, it’s best to get advice from a specialist supplier. You can take a sample piece so they can see the condition it’s in.

This is a laminate, meaning pressed paper impregnated with glue, with a top layer printed to imitate wood. Is it possible to sand it? Without sanding, the surface is neither smooth nor will the finish adhere properly. A good finish, like one from Sikkens, should work. But is this more practical than applying a foil covering?

Hey, great tip about sanding. I should have thought of that! I’ll give it a try.

Thanks

For plastic surfaces, a proper primer works better than sanding. I once painted balcony boards with it. They lasted several years, even outdoors.
