I have doors on my Kallax shelving unit that have become quite cracked over time. There are noticeable hairline cracks and small chips, especially along the edges and on the door surfaces. Now I’m wondering what the best way is to restore these cracked doors without completely replacing them. What methods or materials are suitable for making the surface stable again and visually appealing? Are there any recommendations for sanding, sealing, or special paints? I am particularly interested in a solution that is durable and preserves the typical Kallax appearance as much as possible.

I can understand well how annoying such damage can be, especially if you frequently use the piece of furniture. I once had cracked doors on my Kallax and approached the repair as follows: First, I carefully used fine sandpaper to smooth out the cracks slightly, without removing too much of the surface. Then, I applied a wood filler in a matching color to fill the deeper cracks. After that, I coated it with a thin layer of clear varnish. For me, this held up quite well and also looked neat. Of course, it’s not like new, but the result was stable and visually much better than before.

Oh, I know that feeling! 😅 My Kallax door looked like a worn-out puzzle with all the cracks. I took a more playful approach: first sanding, then using chalk paint – it hides the cracks and gives a cool, rustic look. Finally, I sealed it with a matte furniture wax, which feels nice and velvety. It might not be everyone’s style, but it worked really well for me and is also sustainable! 🙂

Smooth cracks with fine sandpaper, then fill with wood filler, let dry, and afterwards cover with a suitable paint or film. This helps keep the surface stable.

Yay, a small upcycling challenge! I love not just throwing away furniture, but giving it a new shine. 🙂

First, lightly sand the surface to help the filler adhere better. Then, depending on the size of the cracks, apply several layers of filler, sanding in between each layer! Finally, be sure to seal it with a color-matched paint or stain, otherwise the cracks will start again! It’s really great when you can save a Kallax like this!

That’s correct, proper preparation is crucial. I recommend an intermediate sanding with 180-grit sandpaper to roughen the surface without damaging the substrate.

then apply wood filler

When filling, it is important that the filler adheres well to MDF or chipboard, as Kallax doors use these materials. A flexible acrylic filler is best; it is easy to sand and fills cracks without cracking itself when the wood expands or contracts.

After drying, sand the filled area smooth with fine 240-grit sandpaper. Finally, apply a primer to ensure better paint adhesion and an even surface. For painting, I recommend a water-based acrylic paint that has low odor.

A quick question for the original poster: How deep and large are the cracks? Are they just superficial hairline cracks, or are there more significant damages?
