ᐅ Next Steps for Establishing a New Lawn

Hello

About three weeks ago, I laid my new lawn. I have three questions regarding it:

1. The grass blades are now about 4-5 cm (1.5-2 inches) tall. How long should I wait before mowing for the first time?

2. There are still some bare patches (see picture). When is the best time to overseed these areas? Should I do it now or wait until after the first cut?

3. Meanwhile, some other plants are starting to grow among the grass (see picture 2). What is the best way to handle this? Pulling them out is difficult because they are still quite small.

Thanks in advance

Best regards & have a nice weekend

So lack of water can’t be the issue. I water three times a day. So, to sum up, I should first apply fertilizer and, as soon as the grass is about 10cm (4 inches) tall, start mowing regularly. The small weeds will then be naturally suppressed as the grass becomes denser.

Right?

In principle, yes, but if you water three times a day, something else is not right.

This was sown exactly two weeks ago, by hand and with slightly more seed per square meter than needed. Two heavy rain showers have also washed away some of the seed. That’s why it’s a bit uneven. However, I have already reseeded.

This is roughly how it looks in our case as well; I only posted the worst spots. However, I still think I used too little seed. Once the lawn is ready to be mowed, I will overseed again after mowing.

OK, that sounds better. But if you have such a poor area, what speaks against raking it up again now and reseeding it?

I have thought about that too, but then I would have to wait to mow again because the new areas are still too sensitive, right?
And if I wait another 3 weeks now (6 weeks since sowing), I would cut the lawn from about 10 cm (4 inches) to 6-7 cm (2.5-3 inches) and reseed the still bare spots by then.
Or would you do it differently?
