GalipHello everyone, I have had a white KALLAX shelving unit with doors for some time, and I have noticed that the doors develop a slight yellowish tint after each cleaning with water and a mild detergent. This only affects the doors, not the main frame. I have made sure not to use any harsh cleaners and only wipe the doors with a damp cloth, yet this unpleasant yellowing still appears. Has anyone else experienced something similar or can offer advice on how to maintain the white color of the doors? I suspect it might be related to the surface coating or the type of cleaning product used. Thanks in advance for any help!
The yellowish tint after cleaning could actually be due to a chemical reaction that occasionally occurs on white plastic or MDF-coated surfaces. Often, the coating reacts with ingredients in certain cleaning agents or with water, especially if the surface is slightly damaged or very smooth. It is important to thoroughly dry the doors with a clean, dry cloth after wiping – standing water can cause changes.
Additionally, I recommend switching from common all-purpose cleaners to pH-neutral products specifically designed for plastic. A microfiber cloth used without any cleaning agents may also be sufficient.
If the yellow tint persists, it might be worth checking if deposits have built up on the surface, which can be carefully removed with isopropanol (denatured alcohol) – but be cautious and test this in an inconspicuous area first.

In the bathroom, I often have the problem that the white plastic surfaces look somewhat "yellowish" after cleaning – usually because moisture just stays on them. Try drying the doors briefly with a hairdryer (on a low setting) right after cleaning; that really helps me. :-)
Also, consider whether the tap water is hard – limescale can also affect the appearance. If you use a soft sponge, trying a different type might help to avoid residues being left on the surface.
A small tip: Adding a splash of vinegar during cleaning (but not too much) can also work wonders to reduce limescale deposits.

This concerns only the doors, not the carcass. This is already an important hint. The doors usually have a different surface treatment than the carcass. For IKEA KALLAX, it is often a foil coating or a thin plastic laminate layer, which can react to water and cleaning agents.
I would recommend the following:
1. Change the cleaning agent: Use only mild dish soap, no bleach or ammonia.
2. Cleaning method: Wipe with a lightly damp cloth and avoid excess water on the surface.
3. Drying: Immediately wipe dry with a soft, dry cloth after cleaning.
4. Test isopropyl alcohol (around 70%) on an inconspicuous spot and wait briefly to see if the yellowing fades or improves. Alcohol often removes organic residues.
A tip: If the yellowing returns, it may be that the surface is already somewhat damaged, or the cleaning agent leaves chemical deposits. Sunlight can also sometimes promote discoloration.
If you like, you can provide more details about your cleaning agent, and I can check if it contains anything that might be problematic.
