Hello everyone,
I have the following problem: My pet, specifically a rather lively Maine Coon cat, constantly scratches the lower compartments of my KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA. This results in unpleasant scratches and sometimes splinter-like damage to the coating material on the lower shelves. The shelving unit is in a fixed spot, and I can’t just ignore the animal since it obviously feels comfortable there.
My question: Does anyone have experience or practical ideas on how to curb this kind of behavior or effectively prevent damage to the shelves? I do not want to punish the pet or have the furniture permanently damaged. I would appreciate any advice – whether immediate short-term measures or longer-term solutions.

For odor removal, I recommend enzymatic cleaners that specifically target organic odors. Regular household cleaners often only work on the surface, while enzymatic products permanently break down molecules that act as signaling substances for cats.
Additionally, examining the material of the KALLAX shelf can be helpful. The panels are made of particleboard with a melamine coating. These are not particularly resistant to mechanical damage caused by cat claws. A protective film made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or a very thin, scratch-resistant glass panel can significantly extend the lifespan.

Completely preventing scratches is difficult.I feel the same way but want to try to save as much as possible.
Your suggestions about clear lacquer and protective films are helpful. My problem is that I don’t want to put in too much effort because I’d like to keep using the shelf as a storage surface.
Do you have any experience with removable protective films that can be replaced multiple times, or with temporary solutions that the cat won’t accept or avoids? He often plays with objects but can sometimes be quite stubborn.
Oh, that sounds like a real problem! But it’s definitely manageable! Try placing several small scratching surfaces right next to the KALLAX – like sisal mats or small wooden pieces for scratching. Maybe you can transfer the favorite spots from the shelf to these new areas.
And be patient! Positive reinforcement, like treats when using the allowed surfaces, usually works really well 🙂
