ᐅ My pet keeps scratching the lower compartments of the KALLAX unit – any suggestions for protecting them?

Hello everyone,

I have the following problem: My pet, specifically a rather lively Maine Coon cat, constantly scratches the lower compartments of my KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA. This results in unpleasant scratches and sometimes splinter-like damage to the coating material on the lower shelves. The shelving unit is in a fixed spot, and I can’t just ignore the animal since it obviously feels comfortable there.

My question: Does anyone have experience or practical ideas on how to curb this kind of behavior or effectively prevent damage to the shelves? I do not want to punish the pet or have the furniture permanently damaged. I would appreciate any advice – whether immediate short-term measures or longer-term solutions.

With positive reinforcement, for example treats when using the allowed areas, it usually works very well

Very good approach. I would like to add that keeping a detailed record of the time and circumstances when the scratching occurs on the shelf can be helpful. Sometimes there are triggers – for example, certain times of day or after longer periods of rest, as well as visual or sound stimuli.

If you like, feel free to share when and how often the behavior happens. This allows for more targeted measures.

What about claw care? Are the claws regularly trimmed, or does your male cat have sharp side claws? This can drastically reduce the damage.

Thank you, I generally do trim the claws, but sometimes he can be quite uncooperative. However, I will try to be more consistent with it.

Regarding the time of day: the scratching mostly happens in the late afternoon and early evening, when he is probably more active. I will observe this more closely and try your suggestions with scratching posts and protective films.

Just to bring it up again: What about potential stress factors? Cats may show scratching behavior as a response to dissatisfaction or stress in their environment.

Is the KALLAX shelf located near a window or in a hallway? Maybe there is too much activity or noise there, increasing the need to relieve stress.

This is typical for cats when they are especially active. A longer play session shortly before and a calm atmosphere might help redirect their energy.

I agree with the previous recommendations: combinations of protecting furniture surfaces (e.g., protective film, acrylic glass), providing appropriate scratching options, and removing scent marks using enzymatic cleaners are essential.

Additionally, monitoring the length and shape of the claws is advisable, as trimmed claws cause less damage.

Regular and ample engagement with the animal prevents boredom and helps redirect its behavior.

I’m glad to see so many practical tips coming together here! If you create a positive atmosphere and make the scratching post appealing, you also give your male cat a sense of security and well-being – this helps reduce stress-related scratching behavior.

Good luck! 🙂
