ᐅ My KALLAX unit is unintentionally sliding on the laminate floor – how can I stop it?

Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit, which is placed on a laminate floor. Unfortunately, I noticed that the unit, mounted on casters, keeps moving unintentionally whenever I lightly bump into it or sometimes due to vibrations in the room – this is not only annoying but also a safety risk, especially since I store heavy items there.

My question is: How can I effectively stop or secure the KALLAX unit on casters so that it no longer rolls uncontrollably on the laminate floor? Are there specific brake mechanisms or clever DIY solutions that work reliably?

I would really appreciate any tips and experiences!

It’s great that you’re sharing so many practical tips here! 🙂

If you’re looking for something really simple: I just equipped my KALLAX with felt pads, which are mainly meant to protect the floor, but if you block the casters and then use the felt pads, nothing will slide around anymore. It’s very low-stress and really helps!

Good luck, you’ll probably solve it quickly!

I would recommend casters with integrated locking brakes

Thanks first of all for the recommendations.

I was considering replacing the casters with locking brakes, but I wonder if they will hold securely with a weight of 30-40 kg (66-88 lbs) and if they might look too bulky visually? Does anyone know the maximum load capacity of the original casters with locking brakes and how exactly the replacement works?

Alternatively, I could also use a combination of stoppers and anti-slip mats – maybe that’s the best combination? What do you think?

Original KALLAX casters are often rated for loads up to 40 kg (88 lbs), so they should be suitable. To replace them, you will need a Phillips screwdriver, as the casters are usually secured with a screw.

If you want casters with a locking brake, it’s best to buy ones with the exact same dimensions; otherwise, they won’t fit.

Stoppers can also be a good option, especially if you only move the shelf occasionally.

That’s exactly what I would recommend if you don’t want to constantly change the casters.

From my experience, stoppers alone can slip on smooth laminate flooring depending on the load. If you place a non-slip mat under the shelf as well, you get the best of both: the mat increases grip through friction, while the stoppers prevent rolling.

If you’re handy, casters with built-in locking brakes could also be sufficient. These usually cost around 10–15 Euros each and are easy to install since the screws are visible and accessible. Please also consider how often you actually need to move the shelf – if you rearrange it frequently, a brake is a more sustainable solution.

Wheels with a locking brake are best if you want mobility but no rolling away. Otherwise, simple rubber foot stoppers or anti-slip mats work well. They are inexpensive and quick to install.
