ᐅ My KALLAX shelf never sits level – how do you make sure yours is properly aligned?

Hello everyone,

I have been having an issue for some time with my KALLAX shelf from IKEA not standing perfectly straight, no matter how I adjust it. It wobbles slightly, stands unevenly, and therefore doesn’t seem very stable – which is especially frustrating when it’s fully loaded with books and decorations. Unfortunately, my apartment floor is not completely level, but I’m also wondering if there’s another way to set up or adjust the shelf so that it stands firmly without needing frequent readjustments.

How do you deal with this? Do you use shims, special leveling feet, or have other tricks to keep the KALLAX straight and stable? I’d appreciate any tips, especially those that don’t involve major modifications!

If you don’t feel like doing any DIY, you can buy self-adhesive furniture glides with felt at a hardware store for a low price. They help to even out irregularities and protect your floor. You simply attach them to the feet of your shelves, and they can also be removed later without leaving any residue.

Thanks! That sounds like a very simple solution that I can try. Does anyone have experience with whether these hold up under heavily loaded KALLAX units, or do they tend to slip?

Secure the shelf to the wall.

I’ll also look into wall mounting, as that’s probably the safest solution anyway. If anyone has tips on how to do this, I’d be happy to hear them.

One more thought: Is it possible to level the area under the shelf feet with something harder, like small metal plates, in case felt is too soft?

Metal plates can work on uneven floors if they are slip-resistant. Otherwise, I recommend tried-and-true Mojo wedges, wood, or rubberized pads. Wall mounting is best done with brackets and anchors, which makes the shelf very stable.
