Hello everyone,

I have been having an issue for some time with my KALLAX shelf from IKEA not standing perfectly straight, no matter how I adjust it. It wobbles slightly, stands unevenly, and therefore doesn’t seem very stable – which is especially frustrating when it’s fully loaded with books and decorations. Unfortunately, my apartment floor is not completely level, but I’m also wondering if there’s another way to set up or adjust the shelf so that it stands firmly without needing frequent readjustments.

How do you deal with this? Do you use shims, special leveling feet, or have other tricks to keep the KALLAX straight and stable? I’d appreciate any tips, especially those that don’t involve major modifications!

Hello,

roughly, you can place wooden or felt gliders under the feet and then adjust them with a utility knife or screwdriver. Alternatively, small leveling feet can be used. This often provides enough stability.

Hello EDUARDOUS,

unfortunately, your description applies to many KALLAX owners, as floors are often uneven and the shelf’s design is not intended to be adjustable.

I recommend first using a spirit level to check on which axis the tilt is most pronounced. This is important because sometimes only one side of the floor is slightly higher or lower.

The next step would be to use leveling shims or small furniture wedges. These come in various thicknesses and can be placed under the feet perfectly.

Some users also drill small holes into the shelf board and install adjustable furniture feet that can be screwed up or down in height. However, this is a permanent modification and requires tools.

In any case, I would recommend not just leveling the shelf but securing it to the wall to prevent tipping or wobbling. IKEA offers suitable brackets for this purpose.

One more tip: loading the shelf with heavy items can increase stability, but especially in the upper section, you should be careful because tilt can promote tipping.

Thanks for the tip! I actually haven’t checked that precisely yet; I thought it wobbled evenly in all directions. The idea of using shims sounds good.

Do you mean those adjustable feet that can be used on furniture for uneven floors? Would installing them on the KALLAX be difficult? I’d rather not damage the shelving unit, as I might move in the future.

Hello EDUARDOUS,

I completely understand your concern, especially when you want to keep a piece of furniture mobile without making permanent modifications. Adjustable feet are ideal but usually require some adjustments and drilling. If you want to avoid that, I recommend using wedge-shaped felt or rubber pads that you place under the shelf.

It is important to first measure with a spirit level to identify where the shelf rocks or leans. This way, you can make precise adjustments without trial and error.

Some people also use wooden shims placed under the back legs. This method leaves no marks, is inexpensive, and easy to adjust quickly.

Another point is to secure the shelf to the wall, even just with small brackets from the hardware store, to prevent wobbling in the long term. This is especially advisable with KALLAX units.

Short and practical: Always place the KALLAX on a carpet if it is on hardwood or laminate flooring. This helps to compensate for small unevenness. Also, tighten screws or connections slightly if applicable.
