Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I assembled an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit and placed it directly on my newly installed vinyl flooring. At first, it stood completely level, but over time I noticed it seems to be leaning slightly. Initially, this was barely noticeable, but now the unit can tilt a little on its own, which surprises me because the floor should be even.

My suspicion is that the vinyl might not be entirely flat or stable enough to support the weight and structure of the shelving unit over the long term, or perhaps the unit itself has slightly warped due to the load.

Has anyone had experience with KALLAX on vinyl floors and possible reasons why the furniture might no longer stand straight after a few weeks? Are there any proven ways to fix the problem or at least reduce it?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

That sounds plausible. Vinyl floors are generally stable but can develop slight unevenness due to an uneven subfloor or floor movement, which may only become noticeable under load.

First, check with a spirit level whether the floor at that spot has any slope or dip.

If the floor is even, the shelf itself might have unevenness – plastic feet on KALLAX units are not designed for precise leveling. In this case, shims or felt pads could help to compensate.

I also recommend lightly applying pressure to realign the KALLAX and checking the corner connectors, as the frame can shift slightly under load.

Hello,

I had a similar issue with a KALLAX shelf on vinyl flooring. It is important not to place the shelf only on the plastic feet but to also use small cork or felt pads underneath on vinyl floors to compensate for unevenness and better distribute the pressure.

Here is a brief step-by-step guide:

1. Check the floor level at all four feet using a spirit level.
2. If the floor sags or presses in some areas, use appropriately cut shims to fill the gaps.
3. Check that the screws and snap-fit joints of the shelf are still tight.
4. KALLAX tends to warp slightly under load – secure connections largely prevent this.
5. Alternatively, you can secure the shelf to the wall (e.g., with brackets) to make it more stable.

With these measures, my problematic KALLAX has remained permanently straight again.

Oh no, that sounds frustrating when your beloved KALLAX suddenly leans – as if it has a secret favorite side ;-)

Good that you already suspect the vinyl flooring might be playing a trick here. The material is quite durable but also a bit flexible, especially if the substrate underneath isn’t completely level.

I once had a shelf that leaned on laminate flooring too – the solution? Small felt pads under the feet corners and voilà: stability restored, the floor protected, and the KALLAX stands straight and proud again 🙂

Give it a try; sometimes it’s these simple tricks that help. You don’t want to feel like you’re battling a ship in a storm every time you look at your furniture 😉

Correct. KALLAX is not made of solid wood. Small unevenness in the floor or minor deformations in the shelf can cause it to become unstable.

Use felt pads or cork under the feet to compensate. If necessary, add wall fixings.
