ᐅ My KALLAX shelf was temporarily dried after a flood – is it still usable?

Hello everyone, I have an important question regarding my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit, which I have been using for several years. Unfortunately, my living room was recently affected by flooding, and the KALLAX board was submerged in water for several hours. Since I didn’t want to dispose of it, I tried to dry it out as best as I could: wiped it thoroughly, placed it outside for some fresh air, and then used a hairdryer and space heater to dry it.

Now I am wondering: Is my KALLAX board still stable and safe to use after this? Are there common types of damage to expect in furniture that has been soaked like this? I want to avoid the board suddenly giving way or warping later on. Does anyone have experience with wet KALLAX furniture wood or tips on how to assess damage and decide if such a piece is still usable?

In addition to considering the material itself, factors such as mold growth and long-term effects should also be taken into account. Water that has penetrated the interior of the particleboard can lead to fungal growth over time, which compromises the structural integrity of the wood. Since you worked without professional drying equipment, residual moisture may remain deep within the material. If possible, I would recommend monitoring the humidity on the surface and in the room, and taking immediate action if any musty odors are detected.

Another point: heat sources like space heaters can dry the surface faster than the interior, increasing the risk of internal stresses in the material. It is equally important to watch for any deformations that may indicate uneven drying rates.

Hey SEIDLA66, that sounds like a really unpleasant experience, but since the KALLAX looked pretty miserable after the hairdryer and everything, you’ve already put in a lot of effort! 🙂

Just for fun: if after drying the shelf shows any serious “dance moves,” like wobbling or creaking, then it’s definitely time to replace it. But as long as nothing is cracking and you don’t sense any major risk, the shelf is probably still safe to use.

A little tip: try to put yourself in the shelf’s position – if you feel it’s not a disaster, you can continue using it with a clear conscience. Very important: otherwise, test the shelf on a flat, fresh surface because sometimes wobbling happens due to an uneven floor rather than water damage. Either way, for the next flood, better get a waterproof version 😉 🙂

This is crucial. Particle boards absorb water and dry from the outside more slowly than expected.

I recommend measuring the residual moisture using a suitable wood moisture meter (digital devices are now available at reasonable prices). If the moisture content is above approximately 15%, further use is critical.

Furthermore, a surface coating like melamine can swell due to water exposure, significantly reducing stability.

In summary: without precise measurement, it is difficult to objectively assess the condition of your KALLAX. Absorbed moisture can lead to permanent material fatigue and mold. For high-risk furniture, professional drying or replacement should therefore be considered.
