Hello everyone,

I recently cleaned my Kallax shelf with denatured alcohol because I wanted to disinfect it thoroughly. Unfortunately, unattractive stains have appeared on the surface that weren’t there before. It looks like the surface has been damaged or affected in some way.

Has anyone experienced this kind of effect after cleaning with denatured alcohol? What could have caused it, and most importantly: how can I remove the stains or restore the shelf to good condition?

I appreciate any helpful tips or suggestions, as I would prefer not to replace the shelf. Thanks in advance!

Did you use the alcohol undiluted? Kallax surfaces are usually melamine-coated, which reacts sensitively to alcohol. Try wiping the stains with some water and mild dish soap.

That’s true, I’ve experienced that myself and was very disappointed with the stains. It can be really frustrating when you clean with good intentions and end up damaging the furniture.

Try gently treating the stains with a fine polish or furniture oil; sometimes that helps to reduce the marks or smooth out the surface. If that doesn’t work, follow-up treatment with a special furniture or laminate cleaner might be helpful.

Don’t get discouraged—there are often ways to restore the original look at least partially. Feel free to ask if you need more information.

Hello! Denatured alcohol can damage the melamine resin-coated surface of IKEA Kallax, as this coating is sensitive to harsh solvents. The stains often occur due to the surface dissolving or becoming cloudy.

To try to save the shelf, you can attempt the following:

1. Gently clean with a damp cloth and mild soap to remove residues.
2. Lightly rub with furniture polish or automotive polish (test carefully in an inconspicuous area first).
3. If the surface is badly affected, very fine sandpaper (e.g., 2000 grit) can be used carefully to reduce dull spots, but this is risky.
4. In the worst case, covering the surface or replacing the shelf parts might be the only solution.

It is best to avoid aggressive cleaners on melamine-coated furniture in the future. I hope this helps!
