ᐅ My children's room shelf is a KALLAX – will it hold up under the load?

Hello everyone, I bought a KALLAX shelf from IKEA for the children’s room, which I want to use intensively to store a fair amount of books, toys, and some heavier items. My question is: Can a KALLAX shelf for a children’s room withstand these typical loads long-term without stability issues or material fatigue?

In connection with this, it would be helpful to know if there are specific load capacity limits, how these should be assessed in practice, and if you have any practical tips for using the shelf as safely and durably as possible in a children’s room. Thanks in advance for all your insights and experiences!

You have a nice collection there! 🙂 With your 7-10 kg (15-22 lbs) per box, you are well below the maximum load, so it all sounds feasible.

Just: Great that you’re taking care of the wall mounting – that’s a real safety booster. In my experience, the shelf stays nicely stable even with lively children around, and if something falls, nothing breaks easily.

Regarding stability, one more point: The connection technique used in KALLAX is relatively good, but to avoid damage to the edges and connection holes, I recommend distributing the load evenly when frequently loading and unloading the compartments. For larger boxes, make sure they do not rub against or press on the inner edge of the material.

In the long term, this helps prevent material breakouts at the connection points. Minor warping of the shelf components can thus be avoided.

I agree with that. Especially for children’s room shelves that are moved regularly, careful handling is important. Also, if the shelf wobbles, make sure to check that all screws are tightened properly.

Regarding long-term load capacity: KALLAX shelves typically do not show significant material fatigue after 5-10 years under moderate load. As mentioned, proper installation and regular inspection of the fastenings are crucial to prevent long-term damage.

Thank you, that’s reassuring! I also want the shelf to remain safe despite heavy use in the children's room.

I’m interested in the material fatigue topic because the children's room is not only for storage but also for playing and occasional climbing by the little ones. Are there any estimates on how sturdy the KALLAX is with occasional leaning or even light strain from children’s movements?

This is an important point. The surface and basic construction are not designed for dynamic loads or use as a climbing structure. Occasional leaning should not seriously damage the shelving unit, provided it is stable and fixed to the wall.

However, movements such as climbing or jumping on the unit greatly increase the risk of material failure or tipping, which I strongly advise against from a safety perspective. Furniture specifically tested for children’s use is required for such loads.

If the shelving is still intended to be used as an active play structure, additional reinforcement (e.g., metal brackets, strengthening screws) would be advisable, but caution remains necessary even then.
