Hello,
I have a question. We rented an apartment that was fully wallpapered. Now that we have removed the wallpaper, we discovered mold on the walls in the bedroom and kitchen. We informed our landlord, who said that it was only leftover adhesive, and that mold in the plaster could not be possible because the plaster has a pH value that prevents mold from growing or forming. He then advised us to remove the spots with a scraper (not sure if that’s the right term) and then re-plaster the walls.
We are naturally concerned because the mold is on the exterior walls. Could the problem possibly be deeper?
We have two small children and are very worried about this.
I hope you can help us.
Thank you in advance.
Kathleen 🙂

Hello Kathleen!
Well, this is a tricky case because the problem really needs to be inspected on site.
What does the mold roughly look like?
It could be that the old wallpaper was not breathable and therefore sealed the wall off.
As for whether the issue might be deeper, there are a few indicators: Is the exterior facade at the spot where you have mold discolored? Is there maybe a downspout nearby? Or are there drain pipes or even water supply lines inside the wall in the room itself?
The best approach would be to remove the peeling wallpaper to check if the substrate is affected as well. If that is the case, I would suggest removing the entire plaster and replastering it.
I hope I could help.
Best regards. 😉

Hello Schakal
Thank you for your reply.
Yes, the wallpaper could definitely be the reason, as there were sometimes 3–4 layers. The mold was partly on the last layer or directly on the wall underneath.
I will have to check the gutter first. We have now removed the mold and replastered the surface.
I hope this resolves the issue.
Thanks again.
Best regards, Kathleen

I have a question. We rented an apartment that was still fully wallpapered. Now that we removed the wallpaper, we discovered mold on the walls in the bedroom and kitchen. We informed our landlord, and he said that it was just the wallpaper backing, but mold in the plaster itself could not be possible because the plaster has a pH value that prevents mold growth. He advised us to remove the stains with a scraper (not sure if that's the right term) and then replaster the walls. Of course, we are worried because the mold is on the exterior walls. Kathleen 🙂 Are they ONLY the exterior walls? Are there no signs anywhere else where wallpaper was previously? That sounds at least suspicious.

familie-mustan5 Jun 2013 17:38I also had mold problems and sprayed an anti-mold product with active chlorine in the bathroom, which removed it very effectively. Then I treated it with an anti-mold agent. I think the product was from Wepos... Since then, there has been hardly any mold left in the bathroom.
Does all the plaster really need to be removed?
Best regards
