Hello everyone, I have a Malm chest of drawers from Ikea, whose white surface is peeling or losing paint in some areas. I would like to repaint it to refresh its appearance and prevent further damage. My question is: what is the best way to prepare the surface, which type of paint and brush are most suitable for this purpose, and are there any specific techniques I should follow to ensure the result is as durable as possible? I appreciate any tips and personal experiences!

Regarding tools and types of paint: For MDF, an acrylic polyurethane paint is generally recommended as it is durable and flexible. Use at least a 2-component primer if you are dealing with heavily stressed areas.

As for the technique: Always apply the paint from the center outward in smooth, even strokes to avoid visible brush marks. After each coat, gently sand the surface with 400-grit sandpaper to ensure optimal adhesion of the next layer. Additionally, I recommend statically dusting off the surface before the first brushstroke to prevent trapping dust particles.

A small pro tip: Having a small dehumidifier in the room helps promote even drying!

I want to lighten things up a bit :-)

So, the Malm dresser is kind of like an old friend in the living room – when it starts to lose its paint, it almost feels like mourning the loss of a family member 😉

Jokes aside: In my opinion, the most important thing when painting is to create the right atmosphere. Patience and attention to detail are the key to success here! A good podcast or some relaxing music in the background works wonders, and with proper preparation (as already well explained here), nothing should really go wrong.

And remember: Small paint spots on your skin or around the room are no big deal—they just show you’re really getting the job done. Good luck and stay creative!
