Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought an IKEA Malm nightstand and unfortunately, I’ve noticed that unsightly water marks keep appearing on the surface. Especially when placing a glass of water or a teacup on it, white rings or stains quickly form, which cannot be completely removed by simply wiping with a damp cloth.
My question is: What effective ways are there to prevent water marks on the Malm nightstand? Are there any special sealants, home remedies, or protective measures you would recommend?
It’s important to me that the solution doesn’t require much effort and preserves the appearance of the nightstand. I use it as normal bedroom furniture and would prefer to avoid extreme measures like films or covers—rather something that can be discreetly integrated.
Thanks in advance for your responses!

Your issue with water stains on the Malm nightstand is a common problem with painted or laminated furniture surfaces.
Here is a structured approach for prevention and care:
1. Protect the surface by using coasters or small cloths under glasses or cups.
2. For long-lasting sealing, you could apply furniture wax or a clear coat specifically designed for painted surfaces (water-resistant). Be cautious, as the Malm nightstand has a thin laminated surface.
3. Remove water stains immediately with a soft, slightly damp cloth – avoid harsh cleaning products!
4. Periodically reapply furniture polish to maintain the protective layer.
If water stains are already present, gently rubbing the area with some toothpaste (non-gel) can sometimes help, followed by wiping with a damp cloth and drying.
In short: prevention through coasters, gentle cleaning, and occasional application of protective polish or wax.

Hey Goryan,
"How to prevent water rings on the Malm nightstand?" This is definitely a common little battle many of us face – I completely understand! 🙂
My favorite tip: Always place a small, attractive tray or coaster underneath, so the glass feels much more comfortable, and your nightstand does too.
And the toothpaste method sounds interesting—I’ve tried it myself when the stains are already there, and it sometimes works like magic.
A small side tip: Avoid placing extreme heat directly on the table, such as hot tea cups without a coaster—the combination of heat and moisture is the perfect catalyst for water rings 😉

just use coasters, that usually prevents water rings.

For additional information:
The Malm nightstand from IKEA features a melamine or foil surface that does not allow for deep impregnation. For this reason, traditional permanent sealants are not suitable, as they cannot properly bond with the surface.
Preventative measures to consider are:
- Using coasters or small trays made of plastic or cork
- Avoiding standing moisture, meaning cups or glasses should not be left unattended for extended periods
- Regular cleaning with mild cleaners; avoid solvents or alcohol-based products
- At the first sign of water stains, promptly wipe with a damp cloth and, if needed, a drop of dish soap
Water stains usually occur due to the combination of liquid and heat, which causes irreversible changes to the surface. Repair may require replacing the surface if necessary.
