Hello everyone, I have an Ikea Malm bed that has been squeaking constantly at night and increasingly disturbing my sleep. I suspect the squeaking comes from the connections between the slats and the frame or from the screws, but I’m not entirely sure. My question to you is: How can I effectively reduce the noise of the Malm bed without having to carry out major repairs or taking the bed apart? Are there any household remedies or proven techniques you could recommend to minimize these annoying sounds? It would be great if you could address possible causes and suggest simple solutions. Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello CHUKWUDI,

I completely understand your frustration; the squeaking of a bed really disrupts a good night's sleep. First of all, it’s good that you are already considering the possible causes. Usually, squeaking noises in furniture result from friction at the joints or from loose screws.

A commonly recommended tip is to treat the connections where the squeaking occurs with a dry lubricant such as paraffin or graphite—using oil or WD-40 is best avoided since they can attract dust due to residue.

It also often helps to tighten all screws and fasteners again, as movement over the years can cause everything to loosen slightly. Check if the slats of the bed base fit snugly without any play. If they wobble, a small piece of felt tape or foam rubber between the frame and the slat can help dampen the noise.

If the squeaking still persists, you can also check whether the bed is standing on an uneven surface, as this can cause additional movement.

I wish you good luck, and feel free to update us if you like 🙂

Exactly. I know that squeaking all too well – it can be really annoying, especially when it wakes you up several times at night.

I once tried using silicone spray, but it only helped temporarily for me and sometimes even caused noise when rubbed. Therefore, I would rather recommend using dry lubricants.

One more thing to add: Sometimes it helps to lift the bed slightly and set it back down to release any binding. Unfortunately, you can’t always eliminate all the noises, but measures like these usually reduce them significantly.

Keep your spirits up, you’ll manage it!

Malm bed squeaking at night? All I can say is: don’t let it get you down! 🙂

What really helped me:

1. Take everything apart carefully, at least remove the slatted frame and loosen all screws.
2. Clean the threads and all contact points thoroughly – old dust and dirt residues can cause squeaking.
3. Then apply a little baby powder or talcum to the areas where wood meets wood or wood meets metal.
4. Tighten everything firmly again, put the slatted frame back in, and you’re done!

This made a huge difference for me. There’s no squeaking at all now, and I’ve been sleeping extremely well ever since. Give it a try and let us know – it’s great if you don’t have to buy a new bed! 🙂

Tighten screws, clean contact surfaces, lubricate dry with paraffin or graphite, and if necessary, apply felt strips to friction points. This is often sufficient.

Hello CHUKWUDI,

here is a brief guide on how to systematically address the squeaking of your Malm bed:

1. Check the screws: Inspect all screws and nuts. Loose screws can easily cause noises. Tighten them gently, but not too tightly.

2. Treat contact surfaces: Wood rubbing on wood or wood on metal can create friction. Using a light dry lubricant (e.g., graphite powder) or even common talcum powder can reduce the friction coefficient.

3. Felt or foam strips: Applying thin felt strips or foam rubber where the slats rest on the frame can help reduce pressure and thus minimize friction.

4. Inspect the slatted frame: Check if the slats sit firmly within the frame or if they move. Sometimes replacing damaged slats helps.

5. Check the floor: An uneven floor may cause the bed to rock, which increases noise.

6. Complete disassembly: If the bed is very old, completely disassembling and reassembling it can help ensure all parts are clean and properly fitted.

Common mistakes include using too much oil or overtightening screws, which can damage the wood.

With these tips, you should be able to effectively tackle the squeaking by working through the steps one by one and narrowing down the cause.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about any of the steps!
