Hello!

I hope my question isn’t too silly, but I really have no knowledge in this area. It’s about our balcony, which we plan to tile soon. It doesn’t need to look special since it will hardly be used. My father still has stacks of tiles left over from when he tiled the garage, probably from the 1980s. I know that outdoor tiles need to have certain weather resistance—mainly frost resistance. How can I find out if these tiles meet those requirements? Is there any way to identify this on the tiles themselves, maybe through markings? The boxes are very deteriorated because of their age. I can no longer read anything on them.

Hello Tarzan,

It will be very difficult for you to tell just by looking at the tiles whether they are frost-resistant or not. Does your father not remember if he installed them outdoors or indoors? The best thing would be to take a tile to a tiler, who might be able to tell you from the tile’s properties whether it is frost-resistant.

He only installed them in his garage. But now going to a tile specialist store, where they will probably tell me that the tiles are not frost-resistant and try to sell me new ones—I’m not so sure about that.

Hello Tarzan,

You probably won’t be able to tell yourself whether they are frost-resistant or not. Don’t you have anyone you know who is familiar with tiles? If you don’t want to go to a store, then you’ll need to find someone who can help you. But I don’t have to be convinced to buy new tiles right away.
