ᐅ Large Window Front – Privacy and Sun Protection

Hello,

At my house, which is currently under construction, there is a large window section on one side measuring approximately 3.30 meters (11 feet) wide and 5.50 meters (18 feet) high (according to the plans, see photo).

According to the thermal insulation requirements, some type of sun protection or privacy screen must be installed here as well. On the inside, there is no ceiling because it is a large gallery area. Do you have any suggestions on what kind of sun protection could be installed there? Roller shutters would be too large for the total area, a venetian blind would be too unstable and also too large in area? Zip screens could develop mold in damp conditions? I already thank you in advance.

Best regards

Okay, thanks. The topic can please be closed or deleted.

Veto. You are only the topic starter, so don’t act like the owner. This is a space where advice is given free of charge. It’s part of the agreement that no questioner closes the thread and cuts off other readers (who, as is typical with forums, are many times the number of active participants) just because they personally feel they’re done. Demanding special treatment like a private room “at the expense of everyone else” is antisocial behavior, typical of those who don’t understand the basics of netiquette—and hopefully you don’t want to be counted among them. So please reconsider!

I wasn’t aware of that. Then please at least remove the systems; my wife didn’t like that very much.

Apology accepted, but reassure your wife: the house is too heavy to be stolen – and you won’t have to endure a topping-out ceremony flashmob just because of the two photos; even @goalkeeper didn’t experience that.

We have a 7.70 meter (25.3 feet) glass facade and are using external venetian blinds.

Venetian blinds are technically feasible. If there is some budget left, electrically tinting glass is also an option. A sun sail would be a cost-effective alternative (you might find affordable options from the Gorch Fock).
I think the large window front is a nice feature – often people complain when something is not standard and this leads to custom solutions. I find it surprising that you need to provide thermal insulation certification. We have “only” about 20 square meters (215 square feet) of glass facing south, but nobody cared about that.

First of all, thanks for your helpful and kind comments (except for one exception). The window front is so large because there is a very big gallery inside, and of course, you want to look outside, not at a wall or ceiling. A venetian blind of that size would probably be too vulnerable in windy conditions. I think two stacked one above the other are not so easy to "hide." All other windows will have roller shutters. But for the large one, it’s simply too high. A fabric screen would be a solution, but I’m concerned about mold. Has anyone had experience with that? The other option is solar control glazing and indoor sun protection. By the way, the house already looks really good now, but of course, that’s a matter of taste. Thanks.

Based on my various experiences, venetian blinds are the most comfortable and effective solution for a case like this. We are building again now with a similar glass facade. Our first design was rather conservative, and then our interior designer asked why we want a gallery only to look at a wall. So we opened it up similarly over the living and dining areas. We once lived abroad with a gallery and huge window surfaces, unfortunately without shading, but we really enjoyed that feeling of comfort. I think living is too individual for me to let one comment spoil the fun. Some people worried about how to clean the windows; for us, it felt like living outdoors, which was a joy. I can only strongly recommend venetian blinds with guide rails because you can adjust them individually until you find the perfect setting. From spring onward, we had all the doors open and the blinds down/tilted. What feels crazy to one can be wonderful for another. Venetian blinds!!!
