Hello,

At my house, which is currently under construction, there is a large window section on one side measuring approximately 3.30 meters (11 feet) wide and 5.50 meters (18 feet) high (according to the plans, see photo).

According to the thermal insulation requirements, some type of sun protection or privacy screen must be installed here as well. On the inside, there is no ceiling because it is a large gallery area. Do you have any suggestions on what kind of sun protection could be installed there? Roller shutters would be too large for the total area, a venetian blind would be too unstable and also too large in area? Zip screens could develop mold in damp conditions? I already thank you in advance.

Best regards

The windows have not been ordered yet. Therefore, a surface-mounted solution is possible. However, there is also enough space to install a box for external blinds.

What is their delivery time? Your construction progress is already quite advanced.

In my neighborhood, there are larger post-and-beam facades and similar constructions, and they all have venetian blinds.
The largest one I estimate to be about 6m by 5m (height/width) (20ft by 16ft), but it has two blinds side by side. They definitely cover the entire height.
It should work out. Just ask the window manufacturer what they can offer that fits.

I wouldn’t build something like that without air conditioning. The solar heat gain is really intense.

As I see it, you already have a split window spanning the entire height. You can install a guide rail there for two adjacent Venetian blinds. Just choose something more sturdy, like ROMA, which doesn’t rattle with the slightest breeze.

What comes to mind now is that if you replace the small middle windows with some kind of cover, you could probably install 2 or even 4 roller shutters—one for the upper part and one for the lower part. If the roller shutter box for the bottom windows is installed, could you then install the upper windows directly above it?

You don’t really mean roller shutters, do you? Those are huge bulky things that completely block out light when closed. Roller shutters would be down for most of the summer.
Venetian blinds are similar, but at least then you can still look outside.

Does the entire ground floor really have roller shutters and no external sun protection at all (like roof overhangs or anything else)?
Kind of… well… it’s a bit of a shame.

Such important details are part of the detailed construction planning!!!
A box structure on the facade can ruin the entire look. A built-in box requires complex planning and is certainly more expensive because of that.

That’s exactly what I meant: you don’t ruin a "must-have" detail for my dream house through a "flexible planning" approach :-(
