Good day, dear members!
I wanted to ask how you decided on the room layout for your houses.

In my situation, my partner and I are building a house, and we already have the floor plan (L-shape, ground floor and upper floor, so two levels), but we are unsure how to allocate the rooms. I would really like the living room and open-plan kitchen to be on the upper floor. The view would be much better, there would be a nice exposed roof structure, and more light, since the upper floor gets sunlight from morning until evening.
Our bedroom and a small children’s room would also be upstairs, while two children’s rooms, an office, and a utility room would be on the ground floor.
My partner thinks that if the living area is upstairs, we would hardly use the garden anymore. So, how did you decide? What are your thoughts on this?
Thank you
Best regards,
Maria

Once you have children, I find the layout you want to be impractical. One of the best things about a house is being able to easily send my kids out from the living spaces directly onto the terrace and into the garden. From the living/dining area, I can keep an eye on them without having to run back into the house for every little thing.

In our current rental house, we have the setup you’re considering—no level access to the garden. Because of that, I’m constantly going back and forth and running up and down the stairs. Forgot their drink — stairs up, the doll has to come outside too — stairs up, an apple — stairs up, the phone rings — stairs up... And I can’t just sit them in the sandbox and work in the kitchen because I can’t see them from there. So most of the time, I end up staying out in the garden too unless I’m running back up the stairs ;-)

The kitchen belongs next to the garden, regardless of the roof terrace.

The living room, as a quiet, private retreat, could be a compromise placed upstairs.
