ᐅ Dining table in a small kitchen

Hello, we are still in the planning phase, and I would like to benefit from the experiences of those who have already been through this.

A very important point in our considerations is the kitchen. Almost all the design ideas and floor plans we find tend to feature rather small kitchens, open-plan, sometimes under 10 sqm (100 sq ft), with the dining area in the living room naturally being sufficiently large.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the open kitchen concept. I want a closed kitchen. Also, I want the option to have a dining table in the kitchen that can seat four people. The dining corner doesn’t have to be very large. However, I want the possibility to have breakfast in the kitchen so that I don’t end up with a messy living room every morning after eating with two small children.

But a kitchen of 10 sqm (100 sq ft) probably won’t be enough for this.

If you have a dining table in your kitchen, how big is it, and how large is your entire kitchen? I’m also happy to be inspired by photos.

Or am I overestimating the importance of being able to eat in the kitchen?

Teyla, link always welcome!! I will try to upload a floor plan later on the PC, although so far we don’t have a draft created on the PC that might include possible changes.

Will there be anything else from you, mizit?

Yes, today. Sorry, everyday life demanded my full attention.

The file should be coming shortly (hopefully). I’m trying to upload it again today on my laptop but so far unsuccessfully. I will try again soon using my smartphone and Tapatalk.

My comments on this:

1. We were able to see the room labeled “kitchen” in the original dimensions in a client’s house. The standard door was replaced here with a sliding door, and the kitchen was also arranged in an L-shape, matching what I could imagine for my own kitchen. We noticed that there was enough space for a small table and four seats. Of course, it wasn’t very large, but it worked quite well.

2. Regarding using this room as the kitchen as planned, according to the consultant there might be a possibility to widen the kitchen by about 30cm (12 inches) by moving the first stair step. That would add roughly one square meter (about 10.8 square feet). However, it was not entirely clear to me, as we discussed it afterward, how much the staircase would be affected by this.

3. Essentially, I see strong reasons to use the room labeled “guest” as the kitchen instead. It is larger, has access to the garden, and would be quite practical when entering from the garage and utility room with groceries, making it quickly accessible. Here I see two options:
- Keep the wall to the living room, which means there would be no direct access from the kitchen to the living room.
- Install a glass sliding door between the kitchen and living room, which would make it impossible to use that wall as a TV wall, and the couch and other furniture would have to be moved to the opposite corner of the living room.

It is questionable whether the door to the terrace (which is oriented southeast) would take up so much space that we would be quite limited when dining at the table or generally arranging the kitchen. Alternatively, the door to the garden would have to be replaced by a standard window, but that would remove the option for the children to come indoors through the kitchen after playing outside, even if they are dirty.

Or are there sliding doors that can be limited to only cover part of a wall? Hm.

Without measurements of the rooms, it’s difficult to say much.

And where exactly in the kitchen is there supposed to be a table? The dining area is right next to it.

Shorten the staircase? It already looks quite tight as it is.

Are you already committed to a construction company (if so, which one?), or why not use an architect?
There are many house designs with kitchens that have better dimensions than those in this draft. Before you start reducing the steps of the rather unimpressive staircase, which would result in it having too steep a rise, I would recommend looking at other designs for reference.
More specific advice isn’t really possible from our side, unless price, specifications, requirements, and site plan have been posted somewhere?
