Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my IKEA KALLAX shelf, which was recently severely damaged due to a pond water accident. Specifically, the shelf was placed near my garden pond and got soaked by overflow water. The material has swollen significantly, the edges are warped, and the surface looks heavily damaged. My question to the community is: Is it even possible to save this shelf after such water exposure, or is the piece of furniture completely ruined?

Do you have any repair tips or practical experience with swollen KALLAX units?

I would appreciate any advice, as the shelf was still relatively new and I would like to avoid buying a new one if possible. Thank you!

Hey Zarjon70, that’s really unfortunate about your KALLAX shelf! But hey, don’t give up just yet! 🙂

I’ve heard that sometimes swollen MDF or particleboard can be salvaged by drying it very carefully, for example in a warm, well-ventilated place. Of course, not too quickly, as that can make things worse.

If the shelf isn’t falling apart completely yet, I would definitely try drying it slowly and in a controlled way, then smoothing any rough edges with some sandpaper.

It’s not the shelf that’s ruined, just a challenge for your DIY spirit! You’ve got this, my friend! 😉

Keep us updated on how it goes!

Hello Zarjon70,

Regarding your question about the possibility of saving a KALLAX shelf swollen from pond water: The material of the KALLAX is mainly medium-density fiberboard (MDF), which reacts strongly to moisture. Once MDF has swollen due to water, it permanently warps and loses its stability.

A complete restoration is generally not possible. It is recommended to let the furniture dry thoroughly first, for example in a dry, warm place, to prevent further damage. After that, you can try to smooth damaged surfaces with fine sandpaper and seal them with special wood varnish or clear lacquer.

However, the furniture will remain compromised in its stability. For load-bearing purposes or if the shelf is severely warped, it is advisable to consider a replacement.

If you decide to repair the shelf, pay attention to safety, as swollen MDF can be brittle.

If you want, I can also provide you with a list of suitable products and drying methods.

Hello everyone,

I would like to take a closer look at this topic, as I have analyzed similar cases several times before. In general: KALLAX shelves are made of compressed wood fibers with a melamine resin coating or a foil covering.

When moisture penetrates, as in your case, the board absorbs the water—especially where the edges are not fully sealed. The fibers swell, lose their bond, and the furniture visibly warps. The melamine surface can crack or peel off at the edges.

A swollen KALLAX shelf is usually no longer load-bearing in the usual sense. The shelf will not "straighten out" again; drying only affects the water content, not the swollen structure.

A possible approach, if the surface is still in acceptable condition:

1. Complete drying in a warm, well-ventilated area (above 20°C (68°F), humidity below 50%). This prevents mold and mildew growth.

2. Sanding down the swollen areas carefully, as unprotected MDF fibers will then be exposed and more vulnerable.

3. Resealing with a high-quality wood lacquer or plastic film, if the surface allows it.

4. If the shelf carries any load, avoid placing heavy weight on it.

I would also be interested to know how long the water remained on the shelf and whether it was loaded during that time. This can influence the extent of the damage.

If you provide more details, I can offer more targeted advice.
