Hello everyone, I have a problem that many people probably know if they use the Kallax shelving system from IKEA: the surface gets dents very quickly, even though I actually use the shelf quite carefully. The white Kallax shelves show dull spots or dents after a short time, especially on the top panel, when boxes or other items are left on them for a longer period. I am therefore looking for specific tips on how to prevent this. Are there protective mats, special cleaning products, or other measures you can recommend to keep the surface looking flawless longer? And how would you generally assess the durability of this surface? Thanks in advance!
The issue with pressure marks on Kallax furniture is not surprising when considering its manufacturing process. The surface is coated with melamine, which means it has a thin, hard plastic layer that is water-resistant and scratch-resistant but not completely immune to localized pressure. Sharp or heavy objects, in particular, can quickly cause dents.
This should not be viewed as a defect but rather as a normal wear characteristic due to physical properties. My first recommendation is to avoid placing heavy decorations or storage boxes directly on the surface and instead use felt pads or a thick protective layer. Even simple fabric or rubber mats can help.
I also think it’s important to address care and cleaning: Melamine surfaces often appear durable, but chemically aggressive cleaners or abrasive scrubbing pads can damage the protective layer and make it more vulnerable. Therefore, use a mild cleaning agent and a soft cloth to keep the surface intact.
I’m curious whether you have already tried these measures or if the issue occurs even with very careful use?

I’ve had the Kallax for a while now, and my experience is that the surface isn’t very durable. I always think of my shelves as a nice piece of furniture to “caress,” not to bang on. 😉
Exactly, I got some small self-adhesive felt pads, and they really help. Especially when placing plates, vases, or decorations, they’re very useful. I also put a thin tablecloth on it when guests come over to avoid unsightly pressure marks.
Another tip: If you put boxes or crates on it, try to distribute the weight as evenly as possible. The hard corners of the boxes can cause pressure marks if they stay in one spot for too long.
I know it might sound a bit excessive, but a little care is worth it: the surface isn’t solid wood, but more like a durable laminate on particleboard. 🙂 So it’s great value for the price, but you shouldn’t expect miracles. Still, I’m satisfied, or I wouldn’t keep buying Kallax.

1. Protection with layers: As mentioned before, felt pads or plastic mats work very well. At hardware stores, you can find vinyl mats suitable as underlays as well as transparent aquarium silicone that can be applied in a thin layer – the latter is more complicated and should only be done by experienced DIYers.
2. Avoid excessive load: The Kallax panels are made of laminated engineered wood (particleboard or MDF) with a melamine coating. While these panels have fairly high resistance to pressure, localized loads over time can leave indentations in the surface. Therefore, hard, small objects should not be placed directly without protection for long periods.
3. Care: For cleaning, I recommend warm water with a little dish soap on a microfiber cloth, never abrasive sponges or harsh cleaners. Strong cleaning agents can damage the surface and make it more vulnerable to mechanical stress.
4. Handling materials: When placing boxes or containers, pay attention to their bottoms. Soft rubber feet or felt pads on the boxes prevent pressure marks. Also, changing the position occasionally is advisable to avoid constant high pressure in one spot.
Summary: Pressure marks on the Kallax surface are a common product issue that can be mostly prevented with simple technical and care measures. Hope this helps!
