Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to expand or modify my KALLAX shelf unit (IKEA) with custom-built wooden drawers. My main focus is on how to accurately measure and construct the drawers so that they fit smoothly and precisely into the compartments.

Has anyone here in the forum had experience with self-built drawers for KALLAX? I am particularly interested in the following points:

- Which material works best – plywood, MDF, or hardwood plywood?
- What types of sliding systems have you used? Runners, rollers, or tracks?
- How do you solve the issue of inserting and removing the drawers without too much play but also without sticking?
- Can you share general tips on wood selection, surface treatment, and dimensional accuracy?

I would appreciate detailed experiences or any common pitfalls I should avoid. Thanks in advance!

I am still considering whether to install a soft-close mechanism as well.

Soft-close mechanisms are generally a good addition for comfort and protecting the wood. However, their installation requires significantly more planning and precise assembly, as clearances and movement paths must be followed exactly.

This is possible for Kallax units, but it increases complexity and noticeably raises costs. Additionally, the drawers need to be built generously to provide enough space for the mechanism.

If you are looking for more practical solutions, I recommend standard ball-bearing drawer slides with cushioned rubber dampers at the ends – these are low-maintenance and less prone to malfunctions.

I find the topic of KALLAX with custom drawer solutions really interesting. Honestly, I also sometimes feel unsure whether my pieces will fit perfectly because I’m not a professional craftsman.

What helped me the most was simply starting with a prototype made from basic wood. This way, I learned where the measurements really matter and how much clearance I need to make sure everything works well.

Maybe this approach could help you too? Just experiment a bit first before cutting into all your plywood sheets.

And don’t worry, mistakes are normal and part of the process. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you!

12 mm (½ inch) plywood is sufficient for drawers in the Kallax unit, as it is stable enough. A soft lacquer or hard wax oil works well for the surface, keeping the wood looking nice and allowing the drawers to slide more smoothly.
