Hello everyone,
I am facing the challenge of complementing or even completely replacing my IKEA KALLAX shelves with suitable wooden shelves. Since the original shelves sometimes do not offer the necessary stability or quality, I am looking for alternative, preferably high-quality wooden shelves that can be used as replacements for the KALLAX shelves. Accurate dimensions, good load-bearing capacity, and an appealing appearance are important to me. Does anyone have recommendations for wood types or products that have proven reliable, such as solid wood, plywood, or other panels? I am also generally interested in whether there are specific suppliers who produce wooden shelves custom-made for the KALLAX, as I am somewhat handy and might consider individual solutions. Looking forward to your experiences and tips!

Solid wood such as beech or cherry offers very good load-bearing capacity and has a high-quality appearance. However, these woods are more sensitive to moisture and temperature changes than plywood panels. Therefore, I strongly recommend applying an appropriate surface sealant to prevent deformation. Plywood, on the other hand, is very stable and dimensionally stable because its glued layers are arranged crosswise to the grain.

What about surface treatment?Oiling is very popular right now, especially for wooden shelves 😉. It protects the surface, enhances the wood grain with a nice shine, and you can easily do touch-ups yourself. Of course, varnish provides better moisture resistance, but oil is definitely sufficient for the living room.Hey, great topic! 🙂 I replaced my KALLAX shelves with multiplex beech plywood and I’m really happy with it! It looks incredibly elegant and can hold a lot of weight. Just have them custom made online at a timber supplier, where you can specify the exact dimensions. Highly recommend it! Looking forward to your updates on how your solution turns out! 🙂
