JEJEGUHello everyone, I plan to use my IKEA KALLAX as a coffee table, but I find the standard height a bit too low for my living area. My question is: Is it possible to increase the height of the KALLAX, for example by adding extra legs or a subframe, without compromising its stability and load capacity? I would also appreciate tips on the best way to approach the assembly and what to consider when selecting materials. Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

Is it possible to increase the height of the KALLAX without compromising stability and load capacity? In principle, it is possible to raise KALLAX units using an additional structure. I would recommend first checking the static load capacity of your specific model: the material is designed with 8 shelves to support about 13–15 kg (approximately 29–33 lbs) per shelf, with the top panel able to carry slightly more. If you want to build the table higher, the legs or supporting frame must be absolutely stable and ideally secured with screw connections. Light angle brackets or metal profiles are well suited here as they help distribute the load evenly.
Additionally, I suggest creating a large surface area where the unit rests on the legs to avoid pressure marks on the wood. The extended structure must not wobble, as that would affect the durability of the furniture. It remains questionable whether the original KALLAX material is designed for this—especially at the screw joints, too much height and weight could cause stress. Do you already have an idea of how tall you want the table to be?

Do you already have an idea of how tall the table should be? Thank you for the detailed response! I was thinking of increasing the height from the standard approximately 38 cm (15 inches) to about 50–55 cm (20–22 inches). I want to use the KALLAX as a coffee table that fits a slightly higher sofa. The main load will be 1–2 beverage bottles and the occasional laptop, so rather moderate.

instead of the standard height of about 38 cm (15 inches), go up to around 50-55 cm (20-22 inches) That sounds doable. It’s best to use sturdy furniture legs made of wood or metal, about 15 cm (6 inches) high, and screw them in securely. Alternatively, adjustable legs are also available if you need some fine-tuning.
In addition to the previous posts: If you want to raise the KALLAX, you should also consider the stability of the connections inside. Using additional mounting brackets, especially at the corners and joints, can help. These provide more rigidity and prevent wobbling.
I also recommend adequately protecting the surface of the table, perhaps with a glass top or a protective varnish, as raising it can put more stress on the upper surface. Also, keep in mind the stability on uneven floors – rubber feet with a small adjustment range can be useful here.
