Hello everyone,

I am planning to place a Kallax shelf from Ikea on the old floorboards in my period apartment. The problem is that these floorboards are not completely flat; some are slightly warped or uneven. My question is: How can I best level the Kallax shelf on these old floorboards so that it doesn’t wobble or stand crooked? I prefer not to make any permanent changes to the floor, so no major screeding or similar work, please.

What practical methods or materials would you recommend to prepare the floor optimally for the shelf? Are there special pads, wedges, leveling compounds, or other tricks that work well? Tips on how to handle different floorboard thicknesses or slopes would be very helpful. Thank you in advance!

Hello,

It is best to place sturdy washers or small wooden wedges under the feet of the shelf to level it. Alternatively, use foam or felt pads that compensate for unevenness. This way, you avoid damage to the floor.

Exactly! And with a bit of patience – just try out which thickness fits best. A little tinkering can actually be fun 🙂 I once had a shelf like that in an older building; the floorboards were quite uneven, but using narrow strips and wooden wedges worked great and looks good too! Oh, and don’t forget felt pads under the wedges, otherwise it will squeak when moving.

To be honest, an older building with wooden floorboards and a Kallax shelf—it will never be perfectly level. That’s the charm or the curse of old houses. Instead of fighting the issue, it’s better to accept it. Small unevenness gives the shelf character. Of course, if you want to align the shelf precisely, you can use shims. But sometimes you just have to accept that perfection in an older building is an illusion.

Really great that you’re interested in a gentle solution! 🙂 I’ve had excellent results using self-adhesive rubber pads under the feet of shelves – they stop wobbling and protect the floor 😀 If there are significant uneven spots, you can also place thinner wooden strips underneath and adjust everything with fine sandpaper until it stands perfectly stable. It’s fun to do, and the result looks fantastic! Good luck!

Absolutely! These pads are perfect for compensating small height differences. I also applied some construction adhesive to the shims to prevent them from slipping – it works great, and I’m very satisfied with the stable support! It’s brilliant how much you can achieve with so little effort 🙂
