ᐅ KALLAX in the Workshop – Sensitive to Wood Dust?

Hello everyone,

I am planning to use a KALLAX shelving unit from Ikea in my workshop to store tools and materials. Since woodworking projects occasionally take place there, I am wondering how resistant the KALLAX surfaces are to wood dust. Wood dust can often settle into the material or get trapped in small pores, which can be problematic especially for veneered or lacquered surfaces.

Is it possible to simply wipe off wood dust with a damp cloth, or are there long-term damages? Is the material (MDF with melamine coating?) really suitable for a harsh workshop environment, or would you recommend a different material?

I am particularly interested in whether wood dust affects the KALLAX surface in any way, such as causing discoloration or other damage.

Thanks for your experience and opinions!

Great that you bring up the risks, kasan! 🙂
I've been using KALLAX in my craft workshop for 2 years, and even though there is a lot of dust, the surface shows hardly any visible wear.

The edges are also sturdy for me, but of course, you shouldn’t work directly on them with clamps or heavy machinery.

For really heavy-duty workshops, I would definitely recommend something made of solid wood or metal. But for moderate use, KALLAX is really good and affordable!

Hello,

I would like to add that although KALLAX is not specifically designed for workshops, its melamine coating makes it quite resistant to dust accumulation.

An additional protective measure would be to cover the shelves with stretch film or a thin protective mat when necessary to prevent excessive wear or fine dust.

I also recommend regularly checking for damage on the edges, as moisture can quickly penetrate there, leading to later damage.

For heavily used workshops, an alternative such as plywood panels with appropriate sealing might be a more durable solution in the long term.

Wood dust: wipe off damp or vacuum. No problem with KALLAX. Edges are more delicate, so handle with care.

I would also say: simply wipe off dust with a damp cloth. KALLAX is not solid wood, but it is sufficiently durable for normal use in a workshop.

To add: If you often work with very fine dust that accumulates on surfaces due to static electricity, regular cleaning cloths may only provide limited help.

In this case, an antistatic duster or an air filter for the workshop can be useful.

Also, I wonder: How well is your workspace ventilated? Humidity plays an important role in the durability of MDF. High humidity combined with wood dust and warmth can lead to microbial issues that can damage the material.

If you like, feel free to share some details about your room environment.

Thanks for the great contributions so far, very helpful!

@Nakar33: Your point about ventilation is a good one. I only have a medium-sized workshop with a window, but no ventilation system. The humidity level is usually normal, not completely dry.

@kasan: I know of more robust options—plywood is more expensive but not out of the question for shelves. KALLAX is more intended as a cost-effective solution for light to medium loads.

One more question: Are there any specific cleaning agents I should definitely avoid when cleaning melamine? I’ve read about some aggressive household cleaners that might damage the surface.

Best regards!
