Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my IKEA Kallax shelf: the doors are attached with hinges, and these hinges keep pulling out from various points of the frame repeatedly. I have reattached the screws multiple times and even tried using larger anchors, but the hold hardly improves. The load-bearing capacity of the connections simply doesn’t seem sufficient for everyday use.

My specific question is: When is it advisable or even necessary to consider professional repairs to secure the hinges permanently? Or are there proven do-it-yourself solutions that can reliably fix the problem without having to call a craftsman right away?

I would appreciate any tips, experiences, or recommendations from the forum, as I would like to avoid replacing the entire shelf.

That sounds like a deeper issue than just loose screws. If I were you, I would check whether the cabinet material has been affected by moisture, overloading, or poor workmanship.

How are you loading the shelf? Are the hinges subjected to continuous loads that might not be intended? If in doubt, a professional stability assessment could be useful before repeatedly making temporary fixes.

A temporary repair helps only if you know the cause – but constantly tightening screws without addressing the root problem usually won’t solve anything.

Basically, the thin chipboard used in Kallax shelves is a weak point for hinges, which are often used on doors originally designed for other types of furniture.

A professional repair makes sense especially when DIY attempts fail long-term and stability becomes critical—such as when heavy loads hang on the doors or children frequently play with them.

If you want to try fixing it yourself, alternatives like reinforcement panels made of plywood (multiplex) or metal brackets can help stabilize the mounting points. However, careful work is necessary to avoid causing further damage.

Without experience, the effort can quickly become greater than just buying new.

If the hinges keep pulling out, the only solution is to stabilize or reinforce the mounting surface.

Use wood glue combined with suitable dowels or metal reinforcements. If that doesn’t work, call in a professional.

So, I’ve upgraded my Kallax by reinforcing the hinges with small metal plates – now it holds perfectly, no more tearing off! 😊 It’s actually not as fiddly as it sounds, and it saves you the hassle of dealing with broken hinges.

I’d say: If you’re not afraid to do a bit of DIY, try these small fixes yourself before calling a professional.

But be careful: If your shelf is a favorite piece or very special, tinkering with the screws could backfire.

Can confirm: Kallax material is not designed for high loads on hinges.

If you want a durable solution, you should either replace the fittings with special drillings or have it reinforced. Otherwise, the problem will keep recurring.
