Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and tried to install the doors using the hinges that came with it. Unfortunately, I found that the hinges seem to be too small – specifically, they don’t fit properly into the designated openings or appear too delicate to reliably support the weight of the doors over time.

Has anyone else had similar experiences? I’m asking because I can’t rule out the possibility of a faulty delivery or maybe a mix-up.

I’m especially interested to know if there are alternative hinges that might fit better or if you have any advice on how to deal with the “too small” issue without damaging the doors or the shelving unit.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

That sounds really frustrating, especially when everything is already prepared and then something like this happens. I once had a similar issue with another piece of furniture from IKEA, where I was accidentally sent the wrong parts – it was really annoying.

It’s important that you contact customer service, especially when it comes to replacement parts. Maybe it’s just a shipping or packaging error on your end.

If you need a quick fix for the shelf, there are screw-on hinge alternatives available at hardware stores that sometimes fit without major modifications. However, be careful to ensure the dimensions are correct and the stability remains intact.

Have you checked the instructions or the IKEA website to see if the hinges you received are actually the right ones for the KALLAX? Sometimes there are different versions.

I would start there, because IKEA offers several versions of KALLAX doors, and the corresponding hinges are not always compatible with each other.

Technically, most KALLAX hinges are so-called single cup hinges designed for 35mm (1.4 inches) round cup holes. However, the design has changed over recent years. Some model series use smaller or flatter hinges that look more delicate but are actually intended for different types of doors.

A practical tip: Be sure to measure the diameter of the holes on the door side, the depth of the recess for the hinge, and compare these with the dimensions of the hinges you received. If you say they are “too small,” it’s possible they are too short or the hole placement is different – then they simply won’t fit securely.

If you want to return the parts, it’s worth checking IKEA for suitable replacement parts, as hinges are usually available individually.

If you like, feel free to provide the exact article numbers of the hinges and the doors. I have a list at hand and can tell you if they should be compatible.

PS: Also pay attention to the mounting brackets that must sometimes be included with the doors – these are occasionally missing, which can cause the hinges to be too loose in the end.

Thanks already for the detailed advice! Yesterday, I took some time to measure again: The door is model number 502.123.47 (KALLAX door white), and the hinges have the number 702.456.22. According to the instructions, they should fit, as the system seems to be the same.

What stands out is that the hinges appear smaller than what I have seen in videos or pictures online, especially in projection and overall size. I tried to press them into the cut-out hole on the door, but they only fit rather loosely and without a secure hold.

I’m also wondering if maybe there was a delivery mix-up for a different piece of furniture, or if IKEA possibly released new hinges that only fit certain door types.

That’s exactly what I will try to do tomorrow.

Has anyone here worked with the hinges number 702.456.22 for a longer time and can comment on their durability? I don’t want the door to just fall off or the hinges to warp eventually.

Interesting question – and I think there’s more to it than just a “too small” screw or a bit of play.

This usually suggests that the wrong hinge is being used, or the wrong type of hinge. Pushing the hinges in or out is generally not the correct approach for IKEA hinges; instead, they should be secured by screws.

I suspect you might have a supply issue here – either a wrong production batch or possibly leftover parts from an older series that were accidentally included in the package. This kind of thing sometimes happens with large furniture retailers.

Another possibility: you may have seen a close-up of the hinges where the design looks very different because the images come from advertising or a showroom, but the parts have since been updated and the packaging uses older illustrations.

My advice: don’t experiment or improvise, as you might damage the entire door panel. It’s better to file a complaint and request the correct hinges or at least official dimensions. IKEA usually responds quickly to avoid negative reviews ;-)

That said, I understand the frustration – I often feel that IKEA’s quality control for small parts isn’t always optimal.
