Hello everyone,
I’m currently facing the challenge of placing my KALLAX shelf behind the sofa because the room is limited, and I want to make the best use of the space. However, I’m wondering if this will lead to increased dust buildup over time. Has anyone experienced this?
I’m particularly interested in whether dust tends to accumulate there so much that the shelf needs constant cleaning, or if it stays manageable. Maybe you have tips on how to prevent this. I’m also considering whether air circulation behind the sofa is restricted, which might make the dust problem worse.
How do you handle furniture that isn’t easy to move when it comes to cleaning underneath or behind it? I’d prefer to avoid creating a stressful cleaning routine just because I can’t regularly move the shelf.
Does anyone have experience with how this affects maintenance and cleanliness day to day? Looking forward to your opinions and advice!

A KALLAX behind the sofa naturally collects dust, but that's not a big deal.I'd like to add something here: Just because the dust is 'not a big deal' doesn't mean the issue should be ignored. Depending on how tight the space is and how difficult it is to access, dust can accumulate stubbornly, which may cause problems for allergy sufferers in the long term.
Also, it’s worth considering whether the dust problem might actually increase due to limited air circulation behind the sofa. It would be interesting to know if anyone has concrete measurements or comparison studies on this.
Perhaps a small interim solution using air filters or dust protection mats could be helpful?
I would like to add: Placing furniture like KALLAX behind the sofa is a common way to save space, but it does require a bit more effort when it comes to cleaning.
Dust tends to accumulate anywhere air doesn't circulate properly and where access is limited. That's why dust often builds up behind furniture.
My advice is to have a cleaning plan from the start. For example, regularly dust baseboards and floors, and if possible, move the sofa to vacuum or mop underneath.
Alternatively, consider using furniture with smooth surfaces or wipeable materials, which makes cleaning easier.
If the shelf is placed directly against the wall, narrow air gaps can improve airflow and reduce dust buildup.
With regular maintenance, this won’t be an unsolvable problem—just something to keep in mind in your daily routine. 🙂

I have my KALLAX shelf behind the sofa and can say: at first, I also thought it would just collect dust back there. But I simply placed a light cover over it and regularly vacuum at least the visible surfaces. This works really well because the dust doesn’t really become noticeable.
Also, keeping the humidity in the room steady helps reduce dust in the air. I use a small humidifier, and it really makes a difference.
Don’t stress about it— a bit of dust is normal, as long as you have a system to prevent it from getting out of control. 🙂
