Hello everyone,

At home, I set up the popular IKEA KALLAX shelving unit at child height so our little ones can easily access their toys. However, it annoys me quite a bit that the doors on the unit often behave “playfully” — they frequently don’t close properly, rub against the frame, or are hard to open. This is not only frustrating but can sometimes be dangerous if the door sticks or suddenly swings open.

My question is: What solutions or tips are there to stabilize and adjust the KALLAX doors installed at child height so they always close properly and are easy to operate? Do you have experience with specific hinges, magnetic catches, or other practical modifications that can withstand the rough use by kids?

I look forward to your advice and maybe hearing from other parents who have faced this issue.

Thanks in advance!

Install magnetic catches. They work well and keep the doors closed without much effort.

This issue is well known. The standard hinges on KALLAX units are designed for smooth shelf door operation but not for frequent, heavy use from children’s play.

A proven solution is to replace the hinges with soft-close hinges, which provide damping and gentle closing. Alternatively, simple magnetic catches or clip-on strips can be installed on the doors to prevent them from accidentally popping open.

It is also helpful to align the doors precisely, as they are often slightly warped, which causes additional problems. For long-term durability, it is recommended to regularly tighten the screws.

Overall, a combination of mechanical fine-tuning and adding catches provides an effective fix.

That’s true; the doors are designed more for gentle use. I have personally seen how quickly children’s play can misalign doors.

If the little ones are repeatedly mishandling the doors, you might want to consider the following points:
- Soft, shock-absorbing door stoppers or bumpers to prevent the doors from slamming
- Magnetic child safety locks that are still easy to open but hold the door securely
- Possibly adding pull handles to improve grip, making it easier for children to open the doors

It’s also important to practice with the children, appropriate to their age, how to open and close doors properly – this is often an underestimated factor.

I hope this helps! 🙂

From a technical perspective, I recommend first analyzing the hinge issue: Many IKEA KALLAX doors use simple inserted hinges that provide only basic support. For lasting stability, it helps to use stronger metal hinges, such as those from BLUM or Hettich, which include a soft-close feature.

Additionally, if space allows, small internal magnet catches can be installed to ensure a secure hold without affecting ease of opening.

It has also proven practical to equip the shelf doors with self-adhesive rubber bumpers on the inside edges to prevent scraping noises and jamming.

When the shelf is at child height, reinforced mounting is essential to withstand forceful handling by children.
