Hello everyone,

I recently started using my Kallax shelf as a plant stand. I noticed that especially in the lower compartments, where the plant saucers often don’t completely dry out, mold growth becomes an issue. I’m interested in how you manage this to both maintain the shelf’s appearance and prevent or avoid mold.

So far, I have considered improving ventilation and am wondering whether using some sort of liner or special protective coating might help. Does anyone have experience with plants on the Kallax shelf, particularly regarding moisture, mold, and how you deal with these challenges? What solutions are practical and sustainable? Looking forward to your tips and opinions!

This is an interesting question. Basically, I don’t consider the Kallax ideal for moisture sensitivity due to its material (particleboard, melamine coating) when it comes into direct contact with water.

I believe the main issue is less about ventilation and more about managing stagnant moisture. It’s better to water less and always empty the trays quickly.

What I’m curious about is whether there is data or observations on the ideal humidity level in the shelf area to reliably prevent mold growth? Or is this mainly based on experience?

Regular ventilation is essential.
Always empty saucers immediately and avoid any water residue.
Waterproof liners in the compartments are ideal.

To prevent mold on and inside the Kallax shelf when used for plants, the following approach is necessary:

1. The furniture must be adequately ventilated to avoid persistent moisture buildup.
2. Use trays with sufficient capacity that are regularly emptied.
3. Plants should not be overwatered; standing water is the primary cause of mold growth.
4. Applying a protective sealant on the inside of the Kallax shelf can reduce moisture damage.

Humidity levels between 40-60% are ideal for living areas. If the moisture inside the shelf is higher, the risk of mold increases significantly.

I would like to share a brief tutorial that works well in everyday use and effectively reduces mold in a Kallax unit used as a plant shelf:

1. Increase air circulation: Leave a small gap between the back panel and the wall to allow air to flow.

2. Use waterproof liners or special plastic trays that fit inside the compartments. Make sure to empty and clean these immediately after watering.

3. Pay attention to watering habits: Check the soil moisture before watering again.

4. Regularly wipe down the shelf and check for any mold growth.

5. If possible, use small fans or dehumidifiers in the room to lower the ambient humidity.

I have personally had good results with these steps and was able to prevent damage even with many plants inside the apartment.

I can relate to that, lukopra. Plants on Kallax shelves are popular, but moisture is definitely a challenge.

What works very well for me:
- Place a layer of cork or foam rubber directly under the pots. These materials absorb excess moisture, prevent water from reaching the shelf surface, and at the same time promote evaporation.
- Check the trays every two days for standing water and remove it promptly.
- For especially sensitive plants, I also use small room dehumidifiers.

Regarding aesthetics: there are attractive storage boxes that are waterproof yet still look good, which is a practical solution for the plant area.
