Hello everyone,
I am currently wondering how well the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit holds up against moisture, especially from wet shoes. My shoes often end up slightly damp in the compartments, and I’m concerned whether the wood or the surface might get damaged, for example by warping, swelling, or stains.
Does anyone have long-term experience with whether wet shoes negatively affect the stability or material of the KALLAX? And what preventive measures can be taken to avoid damage?
Thank you for your opinions and tips!

In addition to the tips mentioned earlier, I would like to add that stuffing the inside of the shoes with newspaper can help reduce moisture.
Regarding damage: If moisture seeps in and the KALLAX remains damp for an extended period, it can accelerate mold growth, as the particleboard is organic.
Regular ventilation and short drying times are therefore very important.
Basically, I would recommend not using the shelf as a shoe rack for wet shoes, but rather as a dry storage space.

One more question: How wet are the shoes usually? Just slightly damp after a short rain, or really soaked with mud? Thanks for the hint, TEBILO. The shoes are usually only slightly damp after a brief shower, rarely really soaked with mud. They typically dry quickly, but I don’t always manage to dry them completely beforehand.
I will definitely try airing them out and using protective mats.

If moisture penetrates and the KALLAX stays damp for a longer time, this can also lead to accelerated mold growthThat worries me a bit since the shelf is in the hallway, which can sometimes get quite damp. Should I consider using a dehumidifier?

Should I maybe set up a dehumidifier?A dehumidifier can only help if the indoor air is actually humid. Especially in hallways, the humidity often varies because they connect the outdoor and indoor areas.
First, I would try simple ventilation. If that is not enough, a dehumidifier could be useful.
It is important not to leave damp shoes on the shelf for a long time and to equip the KALLAX with a water-resistant mat. This way, you minimize the risk of damage or mold.

Should I maybe set up a dehumidifier?Absolutely, a dehumidifier can be very helpful, especially in poorly ventilated hallways or if the shelf is placed close to an exterior wall.
You should also check whether the joints and the melamine coating on the KALLAX are still intact – small damages can worsen moisture problems.
Usually, protection through mats and well-drying shoes is sufficient at first. Thanks also for your detailed description; it really makes the assessment much easier.
