Hello everyone,

I have been using a Kallax shelf unit from Ikea for some time, which I converted into a bench. The idea is great: storage and seating combined in one piece of furniture. It works quite well, but I have an annoying problem with the seat cushions. They constantly slip off the top edge of the Kallax, especially when standing up or moving.

I have already tried several methods, such as placing non-slip mats under the cushions or attaching them with Velcro straps. However, nothing holds reliably, and I also don’t want a permanent adhesive solution because I sometimes want to clean or replace the cushions.

My question is: Does anyone have experience with the topic "Kallax as a storage bench – cushions slipping"? What practical, reusable solutions are there to prevent the cushions from sliding without damaging the unit or the cushions?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello jens3,

Regarding your issue with slipping cushions on the Kallax, there are indeed several proven methods to address this.

First, it is important to check the back of the cushion and the surface it rests on.

A common solution is to use non-slip rubber mats designed specifically for furniture pads or rugs. These mats are thin, water-resistant, and leave no residue. Placing one between the shelf and the cushion increases grip without the need for adhesives.

Another option is thin, flexible silicone pads that can be attached at specific points under the cushion, for example with double-sided tape that can be removed again. This increases friction and minimizes slipping.

Additionally, you can retrofit the Kallax edges with a so-called "anti-slip profile" made of plastic, which is available as furniture accessories. These profiles help to essentially clamp the cushion in place.

It is also important to ensure the cushion size matches the seating surface precisely, as cushions that are too small tend to slip more.

I hope this helps you.

Hi jens3,

I know this problem all too well – moving things around like that is really annoying! 🙂

What worked great for me was a combination of non-slip pads *and* a little trick using hook-and-loop fasteners. But don’t worry, I was also concerned about things sticking permanently – I didn’t attach the fasteners directly to the shelf, but to the underside of the cushion. The other side is made of small self-adhesive “fuzz” patches that are easy to peel off when you want to take the cushions off for airing.

I can fully confirm that! The ones from the hardware store intended for rugs work really well and cost almost nothing. To make the cushions feel less cold or uncomfortable, I also covered them with a fabric that is slightly coarse (cotton), so they don’t slip much either.

Maybe a combination of both?

Best regards and good luck!

Hello jens3,

I would like to add to the discussion, as the topic certainly has more aspects than just preventing slipping.

When using the Kallax shelf as a bench, stability and comfort are also important. You already mentioned the cushions being too small, but thickness and firmness also play a role. Thicker foam cushions with higher density slip less because they provide better support on the surface. Additionally, some users recommend cushions with anti-slip coating on the underside.

That’s a good point – it can help to recess the seating surface just behind the edge a bit, for example by installing small rubber strips or studs on the inner back of the seating surface. These prevent the cushion from sliding past the edge. Alternatively, there are clamp fittings for cushions – a somewhat more elaborate solution, but durable.

Depending on how much effort you want to invest, you can choose between simple anti-slip mats and mechanical fixing.

If storage space is used and the bench is frequently moved or cushions are often removed, I recommend a removable yet slip-resistant solution like hook-and-loop fasteners with safety spacing or textile fasteners.

I hope this helps you!

Hello,

I just wanted to add a point that others have already explained well: The surface of the Kallax is usually very smooth, which can increase the chance of slipping. Therefore, my recommendation—before buying an underlay like a rubber mat or anti-slip mat—is to check if the shelf can be cleaned or degreased. Dust or dirt can reduce grip.

Additionally, a thin strip of self-adhesive foam tape on the back of the seat cushion can help, as it acts like a small brake and prevents sliding backwards. This doesn’t damage the shelf and is reversible.

I personally used this solution with a bench combined with a shelf, and it significantly improved stability.

Best regards.
