BRANDONN558 Feb 2023 14:37Hello everyone,
I have a question that some of you might have encountered before: Is there a way to make the drawers of the Ikea Brimnes system quieter? The drawers aren’t always perfectly soft-closing and can sometimes produce loud noises when closing, which can be quite disturbing, especially in smaller living spaces or bedrooms.
I’m mainly looking for practical tips or suggestions of simple solutions to reduce the noise or improve the mechanism without having to completely rebuild the drawers. Maybe there are replacement parts, dampers, or easy tricks that can be applied.
It might be helpful to mention that I don’t have experience with complex furniture mechanisms, so I’m looking for straightforward solutions. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

You can attach thin felt pad strips or foam rubber at the contact points of the drawer. That's true, such simple aids often help a lot! 😊
You could also consider lubricating the drawer slides a bit—with some silicone spray or a special lubricant. This makes the movement smoother and reduces rattling. Just be careful not to use too much, otherwise it will attract dust.
I would like to briefly point out that the issue with the BRIMNES drawers is usually due to the material quality of the runners. Simply damping the contact points does not address the underlying cause.
It would be interesting to investigate whether replacing the installed drawer slides with higher-quality ones from a different manufacturer significantly reduces the noise. This way, the root of the problem would be addressed instead of just the symptoms.
Does anyone know of specific alternative components that are compatible without major modifications?

I have tried using simple dampers to reduce the noise myself, but sometimes you feel helpless because this doesn’t always achieve the desired effect.
However, it can also help to regularly clean the drawers and check that all parts are properly fitted – this has made a noticeable improvement for me. It also feels better knowing you are taking action instead of just waiting for it to fix itself.
In addition to the previous tips:
- The Ikea BRIMNES drawers use simple roller or metal slides, which often do not have integrated soft-close mechanisms. A helpful option is to install soft-close dampers, available as retrofit kits. These can be mounted inside on the side rails.
- Alternatively, for existing roller slides, silicone-based glide bearings can be used to make the drawer movement quieter and smoother.
- It is also important to properly adjust the drawers so they are not too tight, which can cause loud noises.
These measures have been shown in practice to significantly reduce closing noises. Although replacing the drawer slides completely is more labor-intensive, it provides a more effective long-term solution for quieter operation.
