KARTARHello everyone, I’m considering whether it makes sense to modify Ikea Hemnes furniture for a home office myself. Specifically, I’m thinking about the desk and possibly a shelf, which I would like to redesign to better address ergonomic aspects and optimize storage space. The Hemnes series is quite sturdy and visually appealing, but I believe it is not ideally designed for extended work by default. Does anyone have experience with this or tips on which modifications might be worthwhile? I’m thinking about changes like adjustable tabletops or additional cable management options, maybe also for monitor arms. I’m curious to hear your opinions on whether the effort is worth it or if it’s better to go directly for other, more specialized solutions.
The Ikea Hemnes is solidly made for its price and features a classic design that fits many interior styles. However, the furniture is not primarily designed for ergonomic home office solutions.
Making personal adjustments can be useful if the following aspects are taken into account:
- Adjustable desk height for ergonomic working
- Modification of the work surface, for example by adding extra components
- Improving cable management through custom openings or channels
Such modifications require craftsmanship skills to maintain stability and safety. Alternatively, adding ergonomic accessories (monitor arms, footrests) without altering the furniture itself is often the more practical and safer option.

From my own experience, I like to enhance Ikea furniture with additional units to better utilize storage space. For example, I installed extra drawers myself on the Hemnes desk, which significantly improved storage capacity.
Regarding ergonomics, however, I would advise against adjusting the desk height yourself. Instead, I recommend using separate devices like height-adjustable desk risers or monitor arms, as they are more flexible and safer.

Cable management is a key aspect. Simple holes for cable passages or small cutouts that you drill yourself can make your daily use much easier.
Adding monitor arms to the desk can significantly improve usability without needing to alter the furniture structure.
Small modifications like replacing the handles with more ergonomic options or adding non-slip mats inside the drawers to keep things organized also provide extra comfort.
It’s important to plan carefully before making any changes to avoid later instability. However, if you are looking for a fully height-adjustable solution, the Hemnes is less suitable.
