I would like to know if it is possible to extend the IKEA Brimnes furniture with custom-made add-on parts. Specifically, I am interested in whether the construction method and materials of the Brimnes system are stable enough to support additional shelves, upper cabinets, or other elements that are self-made or customized and mounted on top. Are there any experiences regarding the connection points and whether the furniture can be safely extended without professional workshop equipment? It is especially important for me to know if the assembly can be modified in such a way that the furniture remains stable and maintains its load-bearing capacity after the extension.

A proven method is to attach a flat metal strip or mounting plate to the back of the furniture in addition to the connections within the furniture itself, which is then fixed to the wall.

This is the most secure solution. For a heavy top unit, a combination of side screws, internal metal brackets, and wall anchors is mandatory. Especially with tall furniture that includes a top section, this completely eliminates the risk of tipping over.

One more tip from me: Use rubber bumpers or adhesive pads under the attachment for stabilization, so the contact surface grips and doesn’t slip. This gives you a better feeling when placing heavy items on it. :-) That’s how I did it, and it makes a big difference!

That sounds very reasonable, especially when combining different materials. Thanks for the tip! I will include this in my plan and hope it will improve the safety of the structure.

In short: Yes, self-builds as an extension are possible. Metal brackets, side screws, and wall mounting are mandatory. Nothing more than that.

Many thanks to everyone! The discussion has helped me a lot to reconsider the building strategy and to understand the key points: components, materials, and fastenings. I will report on the progress of the construction.
