ᐅ Is it possible for a non-professional to spray walls and ceilings? Any experiences?

We want to paint our house ourselves.
Now I’m wondering whether to go the traditional route with a roller throughout the whole house or if it might make sense to invest around 600 EUR in an airless sprayer to save a significant amount of time.
Masking tape is necessary for both methods anyway.

Has anyone here done this before and gained experience?
Would you do it the same way again or rather not?

We have tried both.
The spray device was not bad. Make sure it has a long hose and a standing supply tank. A full-body protective suit and safety goggles are mandatory.
Using a roller is quite exhausting over time, but in my opinion, it tends to provide better coverage.

I was thinking about the Wagner Control Pro 350 M airless paint sprayer.

I’m not sure about that. For branded devices, maybe check if you can find a review on Amazon.

We bought one of these devices to try out. After finishing the hallway, we spent over 2 hours cleaning, packing, and returning it.

- Spraying is quick and provides even, full coverage with a bit of practice.
- Inside corners and edges turn out very clean since there are no visible transitions between brush and roller.
- EVERYTHING must be taped off and covered with plastic. If you forget anything, it will come back to haunt you. The tape must stick well; otherwise, drafts will blow the plastic away quickly, creating fine paint mist everywhere. These tiny droplets dry fast and become even harder to remove.
- Cleaning the device is a real mess. We had the problem that paint ran down the nozzle, along the hose, and into the device. The hose touched the floor, and as the device was moved, you can imagine the rest...

In short: it works really well, but the effort before and after is extremely high and completely negates any time you saved.

I am currently spraying my house using a Bosch PFS 5000 E. It was once available on Amazon for about 100€, so I wanted to give it a try.

Masking off is extremely important. Do this during the construction phase. No doors installed, no floors laid, no electrical outlets or switches. Then it works well. The floor can remain uncovered; afterwards, just go over it with a floor scraper. You do have to be careful around the windows, though.

For priming with a deep primer, this device is perfectly suitable. You need goggles, hearing protection, and a face mask. It can be done alone.

If you want to apply paint, a second person MUST follow with a roller. Apply a good coat by spraying, then roll once from top to bottom. Moisten the roller with water at the beginning. The roller evens out irregularities in the spray pattern and gives a slight texture.

You need to paint twice. Then it looks good.

The device applies a lot of paint to the wall in a very short time. You have to reload every 90 seconds, which covers the meters well — the person with the roller can hardly keep up.

Especially practical on the ceiling.

Since the roller is not dipped into the paint, it stays almost dry and is therefore very light — using the roller this way is not comparable at all to traditional rolling with a fully loaded roller. Very light work.

The paint must be filtered to avoid lumps. Large hair strainers are available inexpensively on Amazon. Also, get a large measuring cup — 2 or even 5 liters (about 0.5 or 1.3 gallons). Mix the paint mechanically, add 2–3 teaspoons of orange or yellow tint (this helps to see where you’ve already been, and the color looks warmer), and then stir in about 1 liter (1 quart) of deep primer LF per 10 liters (about 2.6 gallons) of paint to thin it. Then strain the 2 or 5 liters (0.5 or 1.3 gallons) into the measuring cup. And off you go!

You must not take breaks because the paint will dry and clog the device. Covering 75m² (about 807 ft²) of living space without the ceiling is a relaxed morning. Afterwards, clean everything thoroughly with plenty of running water, or put it in a bucket if you want to continue the next day.

Paint consumption is slightly higher, but we painted with the 25€ 10-liter (2.6 gallons) paint from Toom. Builders who used StoSil paid 40€ for 10 liters and had to apply two coats as well, with a roller.

I would definitely do this again and can highly recommend it to anyone.
